MELBOURNE - Dec 24/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation The monsoon trough extended across Cape york Peninsula and the north-west Coral Sea to Tropical Cyclone Tasha [see separate Advice for warning details]. Tropical Cyclone Tasha is moving to the west southwest and is expected to cross the north tropical coast Saturday morning. A high over the Tasman Sea extended a ridge along much of the coast of Qld. Forecast for the rest of Friday Rain areas and thunderstorms with moderate to heavy falls about eastern districts especially about the southern and central east tropical coast. Showers and thunderstorms over most remaining areas. Light to moderate W to NW winds over the far northern tropics. Mostly moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere becoming fresh to strong along parts of the east coast. Forecast for Saturday The monsoon low will move into the southern tropical interior and weaken whilst another monsoon low will develop in the Gulf of Carpentaria. So further rain areas with widespread moderate to heavy falls will occur generally over the southern and eastern tropics and most of the south-east of the state. Showers and thunderstorms will occur over most remaining areas of the state. Strengthening W to NW winds will develop over the far northern tropics. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds, strong about parts of the south-east tropical coast, will occur over much of the remainder of the state. Forecast for Sunday The new monsoon low will move into the south-east Gulf of Carpentaria while an inland trough will extend across the interior of the state. So further rain areas, showers and local thunder with scattered moderate to heavy falls will occur over the northern and eastern parts of the state. Moderate to fresh NE to NW winds will occur across most of the state. These winds will be strong about parts of the eastern Gulf of Carpentaria. A drier S'ly change will move into the far south-west of the state late in the day. Forecast for Monday The monsoon low will remain anchored about the south-east Gulf of Carpentaria while the drier S'ly change will link to the inland trough. This latter combined feature will then merge with a front which will move northwards along the NSW and reach the Coolangatta area in the evening and this frontal system will help enhance rainfall about the south-east corner of the state. So rain, showers and storms with scattered moderate to heavy falls will continue over most northern and eastern districts of the state. Light to moderate NW to NE winds will continue over most northern and eastern areas of the state. Drier S'ly winds will continue over the south-west while fresh to strong S'ly winds will develop on the far southern coast late in the day. Forecast for Tuesday The monsoon low will move inland into the Gulf country while the frontal system will move northwards along the southern coast and reach the Gladstone area by the evening. The inland trough will remain anchored over the interior and link to the coastal front. So further rain, showers and storms will over the state to the north and east of the trough and front. Showers with fresh to strong S/SE winds will occur along the southern coast in the wake of the front while drier S/SE winds will continue over far southern border districts and over the far south-west. Light to moderate NW to NE winds will occur over most of the north-east sector of the state. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday The monsoon will weaken during this period resulting in the ridge building along the east coast. At the same time the upper trough will move westwards in a weakening mode. So the rain areas and storms over the state will slowly weaken by Friday. Showers and storms will continue near the inland trough and also over the northern tropics. Showers will continue along the east coast in the onshore stream. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Saturday.
