MELBOURNE - Dec 23/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A weak ridge extends along the southern and central coast of Queensland, while a trough is located off the tropical coast. A weak monsoon trough extends across northern Cape York Peninsula. A low will develop on the monsoon trough and move southwest towards the North Tropical Coast later today. Forecast for the rest of Friday Rain areas and thunderstorms with moderate to heavy falls about eastern districts, especially about the tropical coast. Showers and thunderstorms in remaining areas, fine in the far southwest. Monsoonal rain areas will develop over Cape York Peninsula. Light to moderate W to NW winds will occur over the far northern tropics. Light to moderate SE to E winds will occur elsewhere and become fresh on the east coast. Forecast for Saturday The monsoon low will move into the southern tropical interior and weaken, whilst another monsoon low will develop in the Gulf of Carpentaria. So further rain areas with widespread moderate to heavy falls will occur generally over the southern tropics and most of the southeast of the state. Showers and thunderstorms will occur elsewhere over the state with monsoonal rain over Cape York Peninsula. Moderate to fresh W to NW winds will occur over the northern tropics with strong winds developing over the northern Gulf of Carpentaria. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds will occur over much of the remainder of the state. Forecast for Sunday Further rain areas with widespread moderate to heavy falls will occur over the northern and eastern parts of the state. Monsoonal rain will continue over Cape York Peninsula. A clearance is expected in the far southwest of the state with drier southerly winds behind a surface trough. Moderate to fresh NE to NW winds will occur in the north and east of the state, possibly becoming strong near the coast. Forecast for Monday The surface trough moves slowly east during the day. Further rain areas with widespread moderate to heavy falls will occur to the north and east of the trough. Showers and thunderstorms expected to the west of the trough, fine in the southwest. Light to moderate NW to NE winds for most of the state, becoming S to SE over the south of the state. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday An upper low will move through western Queensland with a surface trough deepening from northwest to southeast parts of the state. Rain areas and thunderstorms with moderate to heavy falls are expected about eastern Queensland, extending further westwards on Wednesday and continuing for most eastern parts on Thursday. Southeastern Queensland may see some clearance of the rain on Thursday. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Friday.
