Weather Situation
A weak ridge extends along the southern and central coast of Queensland,
while a trough is located offshore in the Tasman Sea. A weak monsoon trough
extends across northern Cape York Peninsula. A monsoon low along the monsoon
trough will move towards the northern coast during Friday.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Showers and thunderstorms over northern and eastern parts of the state,
increasing to rain at times with some moderate to locally heavy falls. Fine in
the Channel Country. Scattered showers and thunderstorms elsewhere. Mostly
moderate SE to E winds, fresh at times about the central east coast.
Forecast for Friday
Rain areas and thunderstorms with moderate to heavy falls about eastern
districts, especially about the tropical coast. Showers and thunderstorms in
remaining areas, fine in the far southwest. Monsoonal rain areas will develop
over Cape York Peninsula. Light to moderate W to NW winds will occur over the
far northern tropics. Light to moderate SE to E winds will occur elsewhere and
become fresh on the east coast.
Forecast for Saturday
The monsoon low will move into the southern tropical interior and weaken,
whilst another monsoon low will develop in the Gulf of Carpentaria. So further
rain areas with widespread moderate to heavy falls will occur generally over the
southern tropics and most of the southeast of the state. Showers and
thunderstorms will occur elsewhere over the state with monsoonal rain over Cape
York Peninsula. Moderate to fresh W to NW winds will occur over the northern
tropics with strong winds developing over the northern Gulf of Carpentaria.
Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds will occur over much of the remainder of the
state.
Forecast for Sunday
A surface trough is expected to lie from the northwest of the state into the
Warrego. Further rain areas with widespread moderate to heavy falls will occur
to the north and east of the trough, especially the southeast quarter. Monsoonal
rain will continue over Cape York Peninsula. A clearance is expected in the far
southwest of the state with drier southerly winds behind the trough. Moderate to
fresh NE to NW winds will occur in the north and east of the state, possibly
becoming strong near the coast.
Forecast for Monday
The surface trough moves slowly east during the day. Further rain areas with
widespread moderate to heavy falls will occur to the north and east of the
trough. Showers and thunderstorms expected to the west of the trough, fine in
the far southwest. Light to moderate NW to NE winds for most of the state,
becoming SE'ly over the south of the state.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
An upper low will move through western Queensland, with a surface trough
deepening from NW to SE parts of the state. Rain and thunderstorms with moderate
to heavy falls expected about eastern Queensland, extending further westwards on
Wednesday and further south on Thursday.
