A weak monsoon trough extends across northern Cape York Peninsula. A monsoon low will develop on the trough during Thursday. Forecast for the rest of Thursday Showers and thunderstorms over northern and eastern parts of the state, increasing to rain at times with some moderate to locally heavy falls. Moderate to fresh W to NW winds will occur over the northern tropics with strong winds developing over the northern Gulf of Carpentaria. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds will occur over much of the remainder of the state and again will be strong on the tropical and Central Coast. A clearance is expected in the far southwest of the state with drier southerly winds behind the trough. Moderate to fresh NE to NW winds will occur in the north and east of the state, possibly becoming strong near the coast. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday A new upper trough is expected to amplify across southeastern Australia on Monday and persist across the west of the state through the outlook period.
