Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Dec 22/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Flood warnings are current for the Barcoo, Bulloo, Condamine,
Balonne, Warrego, Dawson, Isaac and Comet Rivers, the Burnett Catchment and
Cooper Creek.
For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's
web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A weak ridge extends along the southern and central coast of Queensland,
while a trough is located offshore in the Tasman Sea. A weak monsoon trough
extends across northern Cape York Peninsula. A monsoon low will develop on the
trough during Thursday.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Showers and thunderstorms over northern and eastern parts of the state,
increasing to rain at times with some moderate to locally heavy falls. Fine in
the Channel Country. Scattered showers and thunderstorms elsewhere. Mostly
moderate SE to E winds, fresh at times about the central east coast.
Forecast for Friday
The monsoon low will move close to the north tropical coast by evening. Rain
areas with moderate to heavy falls will increase over the southeast of the state
and the southeast tropics. The heavy falls will become focused mostly about the
tropical coast to the northern Capricornia area. Showers and thunderstorms will
continue over the remaining tropics and develop over the southwest. Monsoonal
rain areas will develop over Cape York Peninsula. Light to moderate W to NW
winds will occur over the far northern tropics. Light to moderate SE to E winds
will occur elsewhere and become fresh on the east coast.
Forecast for Saturday
The monsoon low will move into the southern tropical interior and weaken,
whilst another monsoon low is expected to develop on the trough in the Gulf of
Carpentaria. So further rain areas with widespread moderate to heavy falls will
occur generally over the southern tropics and most of the southeast of the
state. Showers and thunderstorms will occur elsewhere over the state with
monsoonal rain over Cape York Peninsula. Moderate to fresh W to NW winds will
occur over the northern tropics with strong winds developing over the northern
Gulf of Carpentaria. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds will occur over much of
the remainder of the state and again will be strong on the tropical and Central
Coast.
Forecast for Sunday
A surface trough is expected to lie from the northwest of the state into the
Warrego. Further rain areas with widespread moderate to heavy falls will occur
to the north and east of the trough. Monsoonal rain will continue over Cape York
Peninsula. A clearance is expected in the far southwest of the state with drier
southerly winds behind the trough. Moderate to fresh NE to NW winds will occur
in the north and east of the state, possibly becoming strong near the coast.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
A new upper trough is expected to amplify across southeastern Australia on
Monday and persist across the west of the state through the outlook period. So
further rain, showers and thunderstorms are likely to continue over much of the
north and east of the state with the southwest of the state expected to remain
fine.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Thursday.
