Australia -- Queensland Weather Update
MELBOURNE - Dec 22/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood warnings are current for the Barcoo, Bulloo, Condamine, Balonne, Warrego, the Fitzroy River basin, the Burnett Catchment, and Cooper Creek. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A weak ridge extended along the southern and central coast of Qld, while a trough is located offshore into the Tasman Sea. A weak monsoon trough extended across northern Cape York Peninsula. A monsoon low will deepen on the trough during Thursday and Friday and move to the southwest; near to the north Qld coast. A high pressure system is located over the Great Australian Bight. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Rain areas and local thunder with some moderate to heavy falls developing about the central and southeast coast and the adjacent inland, extending to central inland areas of the state. Showers and storms over the remaining tropics. Fine over the southwest and far west of the state. Light to moderate SE to E winds, fresh at times on the east coast. Forecast for Thursday Rain areas, showers and local thunder with some moderate to heavy falls over much of the southeast and southeast tropics. Showers and thunderstorms generally over the tropics and the northwest to the southern inland. Fine over the southwest. Mostly moderate SE to E winds, fresh at times about the central east coast. Forecast for Friday The monsoon low will move close to the north tropical coast by evening and generate strong winds on the coast between about Cardwell and St Lawrence. Rain areas with moderate to heavy falls will increase over the southeast of the state and the southeast tropics. The heavy falls will become focussed mostly about the Central Coast and northern Capricornia area. Showers and or storms will continue over the remaining tropics and develop over the south-west. Light to moderate NW winds will occur over the far northern tropics. Light to moderate SE to E winds will occur elsewhere and become fresh on the east coast. Forecast for Saturday The monsoon low will move into the southern tropical interior. So further rain areas with widespread moderate to heavy falls will occur generally over the southeast quarter of the state. The heavier falls will focus towards the low where low level convergence will be greatest. Showers and or storms will occur elsewhere over the state. Monsoonal rain will develop over Cape York Peninsula. Moderate to fresh NW winds will occur over the northern tropics. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds will occur over much of the remainder of the state and again will be strong on the Central Coast. Forecast for Sunday The monsoon low will move towards the southwest of the state. So further rain areas with widespread moderate to heavy falls will occur generally over the southeast quarter and southern parts of the state. The heavier falls will focus towards the low where low level convergence will be greatest. Showers and or storms will occur elsewhere over the state, with a clearance from the southwest during the day. Monsoonal rain continuing over Cape York Peninsula. Moderate to fresh NE to NW winds will occur in the north and east of the state, becoming strong near the coast. Mostly moderate SE to NE winds will occur over much of the remainder of the state. Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday The monsoon low will weaken as a new upper trough amplifies into southeastern Australia. This upper trough will contract the cloud and rain eastwards on Monday, before a new upper trough moves into southeastern Australia on Tuesday. So further rain, showers and storms will occur over the southeast. Showers and storms will continue over the tropics while fine conditions will be maintained over the southwest. A moderate to fresh monsoon will continue over the northern tropics. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Thursday.
