MELBOURNE - Dec 20/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood warnings are current for the Barcoo, Bulloo, Don, Condamine, Balonne, Moonie, Paroo, Warrego, Mary, the Fitzroy River basin, Brisbane River above Wivenhoe Dam, the Burnett Catchment, Mary River and Cooper Creek, Laidley and Warril Creeks and the Bremer River. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A surface trough is moving north into the tropics and will remain slow moving for the next couple of days. A high pressure system in the western Great Australian Bight is directly dry southerly winds over southern Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Monday Rain areas contracting to the tropics with scattered showers and thunderstorms about the northern tropics. Dry over the central and southern interior. Cool with moderate S to SW winds in the south, tending light to moderate NW to NE in the north. Forecast for Tuesday Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the tropics, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms across the southern tropics and developing south into the northern Capricornia during the day. Dry over the remainder. Light to moderate S to SE winds across most of the state, tending SE to NE about the eastern interior. Forecast for Wednesday The inland trough will form over the eastern interior and move southwest generating isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms over the central interior, tending more scattered in the tropics. Rain areas and showers over the eastern interior and isolated showers redeveloping over the remaining east coast and adjacent inland. Dry over the south and southwest. Forecast for Thursday The surface trough over the interior will move into the Channel Country. Showers and thunderstorms generally over the tropics and the northwest, easing further south to isolated afternoon showers about the southern interior. Showers generally over eastern districts, increasing to rain south of about Mackay as a tropical low in the Coral Sea is forecast to move towards the central east coast. Forecast for Friday The surface trough remains in the Channel Country while the low in the Coral Sea moves towards the east coast near the Whitsundays. Rain areas over most eastern districts south of Cooktown with moderate to heavy falls possibly near the coast between Bowen and Gladstone. Scattered showers and thunderstorms about the remaining tropics, tending isolated in the southwest. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday The tropical low is forecast to cross the central east coast as a weak system on Saturday. Rain areas to continue about eastern districts south of Cooktown with moderate to heavy falls possible, chiefly south of Bowen. Scattered showers and thunderstorms to continue in the northern tropics, tending more isolated through the central interior and becoming fine in the southwest. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Tuesday.
