Weather Situation
A high pressure system over the southern Tasman Sea extends a ridge over the
Coral Sea. A weak low sits off the southeast Queensland coast east of Fraser
Island. A surface trough is forecast to enter southwest Queensland today.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Conditions dry out slightly over central and southeast Queensland with
isolated afternoon showers and possible thunderstorms expected, tending
scattered about the northern tropics and easing to scattered showers on the
tropical east coast. Isolated late showers or thunderstorms in the southern
Channel Country. Fine elsewhere. Light to moderate SE to NE winds along the east
coast, tending NW to NE inland. Moderate S'ly winds developing over the far
southwest late in the day.
Forecast for Thursday
The surface trough will move slowly east over southwest Queensland with fine
conditions in the far southwest. Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the
moist airmass over southern and southeast Queensland and also in the tropics,
easing to scattered showers along the tropical east coast. Isolated showers and
afternoon thunderstorms about the central east coast and Northwest district and
only very isolated afternoon showers over the remaining southern inland tropics.
Light to moderate N to Ne winds along the east coast, tending NE to NW inland
east of the surface trough and moderate S to SW west of the surface trough.
Forecast for Friday
The surface trough sits from the northwest through to the southeast interior
with moist conditions and scattered showers and thunderstorms about southeast
and central Queensland, and also about the tropics through easing to scattered
showers about the east coast north of Cooktown. Isolated showers and
thunderstorms in the northwest. Fine conditions southwest of the surface trough.
Forecast for Saturday
The surface trough is expected to lie from the northwest through to the
southeast interior. Continuing unstable conditions over districts northeast of
the trough with generally scattered showers and thunderstorms, spreading to rain
late in all but far northern districts. Elsewhere, an upper trough developing
over the Great Australian Bight is expected to extend high cloud over southern
and southwest Queensland with rain areas developing during the day.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
The current weakening surface trough remains slow moving on Sunday before a
new surface trough is expected to enter the far southwest during Sunday and move
northeast to lie from the southeast Gulf to the Central Coast by Tuesday. The
upper trough weakens and moves east and as a result expect scattered showers and
thunderstorms generally northeast of the surface trough, increasing to rain
areas with moderate to locally heavy falls near the trough, mostly on Sunday.
Becoming fine over the region southwest of the trough during Monday and
Tuesday.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Wednesday.
