MELBOURNE - Dec 14/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood warnings are current for the Barcoo, Bulloo, Condamine, Balonne, Paroo, Warrego, Moonie and Weir Rivers, the Fitzroy River Basin, Burnett Catchment and Cooper and Baffle Creeks. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high pressure system over the southern Tasman Sea extends a ridge over the Coral Sea. A weak low sits off the southeast Queensland coast east of Fraser Island. A surface trough is forecast to enter southwest Queensland today. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Conditions dry out slightly over central and southeast Queensland with isolated afternoon showers and possible thunderstorms expected, tending scattered about the northern tropics and easing to scattered showers on the tropical east coast. Isolated late showers or thunderstorms in the southern Channel Country. Fine elsewhere. Light to moderate SE to NE winds along the east coast, tending NW to NE inland. Moderate S'ly winds developing over the far southwest late in the day. Forecast for Thursday The surface trough will move slowly east over southwest Queensland with fine conditions in the far southwest. Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the moist airmass over southern and southeast Queensland and also in the tropics, easing to scattered showers along the tropical east coast. Isolated showers and afternoon thunderstorms about the central east coast and Northwest district and only very isolated afternoon showers over the remaining southern inland tropics. Light to moderate N to Ne winds along the east coast, tending NE to NW inland east of the surface trough and moderate S to SW west of the surface trough. Forecast for Friday The surface trough sits from the northwest through to the southeast interior with moist conditions and scattered showers and thunderstorms about southeast and central Queensland, and also about the tropics through easing to scattered showers about the east coast north of Cooktown. Isolated showers and thunderstorms in the northwest. Fine conditions southwest of the surface trough. Forecast for Saturday The surface trough is expected to lie from the northwest through to the southeast interior. Continuing unstable conditions over districts northeast of the trough with generally scattered showers and thunderstorms, spreading to rain late in all but far northern districts. Elsewhere, an upper trough developing over the Great Australian Bight is expected to extend high cloud over southern and southwest Queensland with rain areas developing during the day. Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday The current weakening surface trough remains slow moving on Sunday before a new surface trough is expected to enter the far southwest during Sunday and move northeast to lie from the southeast Gulf to the Central Coast by Tuesday. The upper trough weakens and moves east and as a result expect scattered showers and thunderstorms generally northeast of the surface trough, increasing to rain areas with moderate to locally heavy falls near the trough, mostly on Sunday. Becoming fine over the region southwest of the trough during Monday and Tuesday. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Wednesday.
