MELBOURNE - Dec 13/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A weakening high pressure system northeast of New Zealand extends a ridge over the Coral Sea and along the tropical east coast of Queensland. A trough lies off the east coast of Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Monday Very isolated showers and thunderstorms over eastern districts this afternoon and evening, increasing towards Cape York Peninsular. Fine over the western interior. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds about the east coast. Lighter SE winds over the interior. Light to moderate SE/NE winds over the tropics. Forecast for Tuesday Isolated showers and thunderstorms continuing over eastern districts in the afternoon and evening, increasing over Cape York Peninsular. Fine over the western interior. Mostly light to moderate S to SE winds inland, tending SE to NE about the east coast. Forecast for Wednesday Thunderstorm activity will weaken over eastern districts but continue through the tropics and extend west around the southern Gulf coast. A new surface trough will enter the far of the state later in the day with a S'ly wind change and may generate some isolated late showers or thunderstorms. Thunderstorm activity will probably decrease into shower activity about the central coast. Forecast for Thursday The surface trough will reach the central interior in the afternoon and generate showers and thunderstorms late in the day in a band from the NW to the southern interior. Thunderstorm activity will increase over the SE interior with increased rainfall. In the tropics thunderstorm activity will be confined to western Cape York Peninsular with isolated showers mainly over the eastern tropics and the eastern interior. Forecast for Friday The surface trough slowly enters the Maranoa and central west districts. Showers and thunderstorms generally over the state east of the trough, increasing towards the SE interior in the afternoon. Showers generally about the central and NE tropical coasts. Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday The trough will move into the SE with rain areas and thunderstorms with moderate to heavy falls. Patchy rain will also develop across the southern interior from the west. By Sunday the trough has moved NE into the central west and the Burnett region with thunderstorms and some heavy falls. Patchy lighter rain remaining across southern districts. By Monday, rain and thunderstorms contracting over the northern half of the state, becoming fine over southern districts. Drier and hot over the SE with W'ly winds. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Tuesday.
