MELBOURNE - Dec 11/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood warnings are current for the Barcoo, Cooper Creek, Bulloo, Condamine, Maranoa, Balonne, Fitzroy, Paroo, Macintyre and Warrego Rivers and tributaries. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A weakening high pressure system northeast of New Zealand extends a ridge over the Coral Sea and along the tropical east coast of Queensland. A surface trough lies over the Queensland interior, moving slowly east. A weak low pressure system is forecast to develop off the Wide Bay coast on Sunday. Forecast for the rest of Saturday Scattered showers, rain areas and thunderstorms from the Gulf Country over the central and southern interior, spreading over remaining eastern districts during the day with moderate to locally heavy falls. Scattered showers and thunderstorms about Cape York Peninsula. Moderate NE to NW winds over eastern districts, shifting cooler SW to SE in the west. Forecast for Sunday Rain and thunderstorms with possible moderate to locally heavy falls about the tropics and eastern districts, with rain contracting to the east coast late in the day. Scattered showers and thunderstorms about Cape York Peninsula, tending isolated about the southeast. Fine over the southwest. Moderate to fresh NW to NE winds about the east coast, tending SW to SE over most inland parts. Forecast for Monday A weak low pressure system is forecast to develop off the Wide Bay coast bringing morning rain areas and thunderstorms with possible moderate to locally heavy falls about the Wide Bay and Capricornia coasts. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms should continue over eastern districts, more scattered about the tropics. Showers about the far southeast coast and fine through the west. Moderate SE to NE winds over much of the east coast, fresh about the Capricornia and Wide Bay coasts and tending light to moderate S to SE inland. Forecast for Tuesday The low is forecast to remain off the Wide Bay or Southeast Coast while slowly moving east. A new high is expected to move into the southern Tasman Sea. Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the tropics, tending more isolated over remaining eastern and central districts. Fine in the west. Mostly light to moderate S to SE winds inland, tending SE to NE about the east coast and moderate to fresh SE to NE about the southeast and Wide Bay coasts. Forecast for Wednesday The low is forecast to weaken and move away from the coast while a weak high in the southern Tasman Sea will maintain mostly light to moderate SE to NE winds along the east coast. Moist conditions inland with isolated showers and thunderstorms through eastern and central districts, tending more scattered in the tropics. Fine in the far west. Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday The high over the southern Tasman Sea will extend a weak ridge onto the east coast maintaining a moist N to NE flow. A new surface trough will enter the far southwest of the state and become slow moving. Instability will persist over the state with showers and thunderstorms over most districts, more likely in the tropics and the far southwest. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Sunday.
