Weather Situation
A weakening high pressure system northeast of New Zealand extends a ridge
over the Coral Sea and along the tropical east coast of Queensland. A surface
trough lies over the Queensland interior, moving slowly east.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Scattered showers, rain areas and thunderstorms from the Gulf Country to over
the central and southern interior, spreading over remaining eastern districts
during the day with moderate to locally heavy falls. Isolated showers or light
rain persisting over western Queensland. Light to moderate SE to NE winds over
the tropics. Moderate NE to NW winds elsewhere over eastern districts, shifting
cooler SW to SE over the remaining interior.
Forecast for Sunday
The surface trough is expected to continue to extend from the Gulf Country to
over the central and southeast interior. The upper level trough should shift a
little further east, producing a band of rain and thunderstorms from the tropics
and over central and southeast districts, easing to isolated showers and
thunderstorms over the southeast interior during the day. Fine over the
southwest in the wake of the troughs. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds over
western districts. Moderate NE to NW winds elsewhere, fresh at times along the
southeast coast.
Forecast for Monday
The surface trough is expected to extend from the Gulf Country to the
southern interior. The upper level trough is expected to move towards the east
coast, with another surface trough possibly developing off the Capricorn coast
as a result. Morning rain areas and scattered afternoon showers and
thunderstorms should continue over the northeast tropics and through central
districts northeast of about Emerald. Showers and isolated thunderstorms
continuing over southeastern districts and remaining central parts due to
instability associated with the upper level trough. Moderate SE to NE winds over
much of the state, fresher about the Capricornia coast near the trough offshore.
Forecast for Tuesday
A new high is expected to move into the southern Tasman Sea while the upper
level trough should move off the east Queensland coast into the Coral Sea at
night. The surface trough may persist near the Capricorn and Wide Bay coast in
the morning causing fresh winds. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms
over most of northern and eastern Queensland.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
The high over the southern Tasman Sea will extend a weak ridge onto the east
coast maintaining a moist E to NE flow. A new surface trough will enter the far
southwest of the state and become slow moving. Supported by another upper level
trough, the instability will persist over the state with showers and
thunderstorms over the tropics and over most of the eastern and southern
interior.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Saturday.
