Weather Situation
A weakening high pressure system [1020 hPa] over the Tasman Sea extends a
ridge over the southern Coral Sea and along the tropical east coast of
Queensland. A surface trough lies over western Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Isolated showers about the Capricornia to Southeast Coast. Showers and
isolated thunderstorms over the northern tropics and eastern interior,
increasing to areas of rain and thunderstorms with moderate to locally heavy
falls over western Queensland and the southern interior. Rain easing to isolated
showers over the far southwest during the day. Moderate SE to NE winds over the
tropics. Light to moderate NE to NW winds elsewhere, fresh along the southern
coast in the afternoon. A cool day with moderate to locally fresh S to SE winds
over the west.
Forecast for Saturday
The surface trough is expected to remain slow moving over the central and
southeast interior. An upper level trough will approach western Queensland and
start to move slowly east. The band of rain and thunderstorms with moderate to
locally heavy falls should continue to extend over northwestern parts of the
state into the southern interior, extending east into the central interior and
southeast during the day. Isolated showers over the southwest in the wake of the
rain band. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the tropics,
increasing to thundery rain areas over the tropical interior. Light to moderate
SE to NE winds over the tropics. Moderate NE to NW winds elsewhere over eastern
and central districts, fresh at times along the southeast coast. Moderate to
fresh S to SE winds over the west of the state. Cool daytime temperatures over
the interior.
Forecast for Sunday
The surface trough is expected to continue to extend from the Gulf Country
into the central and southeast interior. The upper level trough should shift a
little further east, producing a band of rain and thunderstorms from the tropics
and over central and southeast districts, easing to isolated showers and
thunderstorms over the southeast interior during the day. Fine over the
southwest in the wake of the troughs. Moderate to fresh S to SE winds over
western districts. Moderate NE to NW winds elsewhere, fresh at times along the
southeast coast.
Forecast for Monday
The surface trough is expected to extend from the Gulf Country to the
southern interior. The upper level trough is expected to move towards the east
coast, with another surface trough possibly developing off the Capricorn coast
as a result. Rain areas and thunderstorms should continue over the tropics and
through central districts northeast of about Emerald. Showers and isolated
thunderstorms continuing over southeastern districts and remaining central parts
due to instability associated with the upper level trough. Moderate SE to NE
winds over much of the state, tending moderate to fresh NE to NW along the
southern coast.
Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
A new high is expected to move into the southern Tasman Sea on Tuesday while
the upper level trough should move off the east Queensland coast into the Coral
Sea. The surface troughs should therefore weaken during Tuesday and Wednesday
with the trough off the east coast expected to move further offshore. Showers
and thunderstorms are expected to continue over the tropics. Rain should ease to
showers and isolated thunderstorms about central districts on Tuesday, though
this is dependent on the movement of the east coast trough. Isolated showers and
inland thunderstorms continuing about the central interior and southeast
districts. A new upper level trough may enter southern Queensland on Wednesday,
increasing instability with possible showers and isolated thunderstorms
developing over the southern interior.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Friday.
