Weather Situation
A high pressure system to the east of Tasmania is maintaining a ridge across eastern parts of the state ahead of a cold front moving into the west today, through much of the state on Thursday and through most of the northeast on Friday. This system will bring showers, rain and thunderstorms to most parts of the state from now until Friday before weakening over the northeast during Saturday. Another high is forecast to extend a ridge across from the west in the wake of the front, bringing a drier air mass to most districts.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Widespread rain showers and thunderstorms across the western inland, with heavy falls likely. Scattered showers and possible thunder in the far northeast. Isolated showers or possible thunderstorms in most of the remainder. Gusty northwest to northeast winds ahead of a southwesterly change in the far west.
Forecast for Thursday
Widespread rain, showers and thunderstorms extending to the coast in the south and to the western slopes of the Central Tablelands and clearing from the southwest. Isolated showers over the remainder with the chance of thunderstorms except in the far northeast. Moderate to fresh northwest to northeast winds ahead of a west to southwest change in southwestern parts.
Forecast for Friday
Fine across the southern inland and mostly fine in the far northeast. Widespread rain or showers with scattered to isolated thunderstorms and locally heavy falls in the remainder of the northeast. Isolated showers elsewhere, clearing from the west. North to northwesterly winds in the northeast, west to southwesterly elsewhere tending southerly on the south coast.
Forecast for Saturday
Rain areas and isolated thunderstorms in the northeast. Isolated showers on the south and central coasts and adjacent east ranges. Fine in the remainder. Southwest to southeasterly winds extending throughout, tending north to northeasterly later on the South Coast.
Forecast for Sunday
Isolated showers in the northeast, increasing in the afternoon with thunderstorms developing. Isolated showers along the eastern southern border. West to southwest winds.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EDT Thursday.
