Weather Situation A strengthening high pressure system to the east of Tasmania is maintaining a ridge across the region, as a trough over South Australia draws slowly closer. The trough is expected to gain momentum as it links with a cold front from the Southern Ocean, and will enter New South Wales on Wednesday. This system will bring rain to most parts of the state from Wednesday through to Friday before weakening over the northeast during Saturday. Another high is forecast to extend a ridge across from the west in the trough's wake, bringing a drier air mass to most districts. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Widespread rain and thunderstorms extending across the western inland, with heavy falls likely. Scattered showers and possible thunder in the far northeast. Isolated showers or possible thunderstorms in most of the remainder. North to northeast winds, and a southwesterly change in the far west. Forecast for Thursday Widespread rain and thunderstorms extending to the Hunter and Central West Plains and clearing from the west, with scattered to isolated showers and possible thunderstorms in the northeast. Moderate to heavy falls likely, particularly west of the tablelands. North to northwesterly winds in the northeast, with a south to southwesterly change extending across remaining districts. Forecast for Friday Fine across the southern inland. Widespread rain with scattered to isolated thunderstorms and locally heavy falls in the northeast. Isolated showers elsewhere, clearing from the west. North to northwesterly winds in the northeast, west to southwesterly elsewhere tending southerly on the south coast. Forecast for Saturday Rain areas and isolated thunderstorms in the northeast. Isolated showers on the south and central coasts and adjacent east ranges. Fine in the remainder. Southwest to southeasterly winds extending throughout, tending north to northeasterly later on the South Coast. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EDT Wednesday. * Calls to 1300 numbers cost around 27.5c incl. GST, higher from mobiles or public phones.
