Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Dec 6/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Flood warnings are current for the Bulloo, Condamine,
Maranoa, Paroo, Thomson, Barcoo and Warrego Rivers, The Balonne River and
tributaries, the Fitzroy River Basin and Cooper Creek.

Weather Situation
A high pressure system [1025hPa] near Tasmania is moving east into the
southern Tasman Sea and extends a ridge into the southern Coral Sea. A trough is
located off the Queensland east coast.  Generally unstable conditions persist
across the state.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Isolated showers over the far northeast tropical coast. Scattered showers and
thunderstorms elsewhere over central and eastern Queensland with possible
locally heavy falls with thunderstorms. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over
western Queensland though with little or no rain. Light to moderate SE to NE
winds about the east coast, fresh at times along the southern coast. Mostly
light and variable winds inland.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high is expected to intensify over the southern Tasman Sea and continue
to extend a ridge into the southern Coral Sea. The surface trough off the east
coast should weaken though a new surface trough approaches western Queensland.
Unstable conditions persist over much of the state with scattered showers and
thunderstorms, tending more isolated in the far west due to drier air. Isolated
showers about the far northeast tropics. Light to moderate SE to NE winds along
the east coast, fresh at times in the far south and north. Light to moderate NW
to NE winds inland.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high in the southern Tasman Sea will continue to direct moist SE to NE
winds onto the east coast, tending NE to NW over the interior ahead of the
surface trough entering far southwestern parts of Queensland late in the day.
Unstable conditions will extend over much of the state ahead of this trough with
scattered showers and thunderstorms over western districts and the central and
southern interior. Scattered showers over the southeast with possible isolated
thunderstorms inland. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the
tropics, with the thunderstorms occurring chiefly inland.
Forecast for Thursday
The high will persist over the southern Tasman Sea though is expected to
weaken. The surface trough will most likely remain slow moving over the Channel
Country, with unstable conditions continuing over much of the state. Scattered
showers and thunderstorms are expected over western districts in the moist NE to
NW flow ahead of the trough. Scattered showers will continue about the east
coast in the continuing moist SE to NE flow, with more isolated showers and
possible thunderstorms over the eastern interior.
Forecast for Friday
The high is expected to weaken further over the Tasman Sea. The surface
trough will most likely shift a little further east over western Queensland. At
the same time an upper level trough will intensify over western parts of the
state. The combination of the two systems should result in a band of rain and
thunderstorms extending from the Gulf Country into the southern interior,
clearing the far southwest during the day. Possible locally heavy falls within
the band, chiefly with thunderstorms. Scattered showers over the tropics, with
isolated thunderstorms inland. Isolated showers over southeast and central
districts, with possible afternoon thunderstorms inland. Moderate to fresh SE to
NE winds east of the trough, tending N to NE in the south. Moderate to fresh S
to SE winds behind the trough.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
The high will continue to weaken over the southern Tasman Sea and move slowly
east. Some uncertainty exists with the movement of the surface trough but at
this stage the most likely scenario is for it to remain anchored over the
northwest though move slowly east over southern parts of the state, possibly
reaching the southeast coast over the weekend. A band of showers and
thunderstorms will extend over the state near and to the east of the trough,
most likely contracting into northern and eastern districts by Monday with
possible locally heavy falls. Fine conditions developing over western Queensland
in the wake of the trough.

Tuesday.
