Weather Situation A high pressure system over the northern Tasman Sea is weakening, but is being replaced by another high, currently centred to the southeast of Tasmania. This high will strengthen over the next day or two while a trough over Western Australia draws slowly closer. By late Tuesday this trough is expected to gain momentum as it links with a cold front from the Southern Ocean. This system will bring rain to large parts of New South Wales from Wednesday through to Friday before weakening over the northeast during Saturday. A high is forecast to extend a ridge across the region in the trough's wake bringing a drier air mass to most districts. Forecast for the rest of Monday Rain areas in the northeast corner, with possible local thunder. Scattered showers about the central and southern coast, becoming isolated in the afternoon. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms elsewhere, with showers tending scattered about central parts of the inland. East to northeast winds. Forecast for Tuesday Rain areas in the northeast, and developing in the far west. Showers elsewhere. The chance of thunderstorms, except for the southern coast and ranges. East to northeast winds. Forecast for Wednesday Widespread rain and thunderstorms extending across the western inland, with heavy falls likely. Rain periods and possible thunder in the far northeast. Isolated showers or possible thunderstorms elsewhere. North to northeast winds, and a southwesterly change in the far west. Forecast for Thursday Widespread rain and thunderstorms extending to the eastern half of the state and clearing from the west. Moderate to heavy falls likely, particularly west of the tablelands. Northerly winds in the northeast, with a south to southwesterly change extending across remaining districts. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EDT Monday. * Calls to 1300 numbers cost around 27.5c incl. GST, higher from mobiles or public phones.
