MELBOURNE - Dec 5/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time Flood warnings are current for the Bulloo, Thomson, Barcoo, Paroo, Warrego, Maranoa, and Bremer Rivers, Cooper, Laidley, Lockyer and Warrill Creeks and the Fitzroy River Basin. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high pressure system near New Zealand is weakening and moving southeast. The high extends a weak ridge into the southern Coral Sea. A weak trough is located off the Queensland east coast and generally moist NE winds exist across most of Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Sunday Isolated showers and thunderstorms over most eastern districts, the tropics and into the Maranoa and Warrego. Showers becoming scattered and tending to rain in parts of the southeast. Mostly fine conditions in the west with some high cloud and little or no rain. Mostly light E to NE winds about the east coast, tending moderate to fresh NE in the southeast. Mostly light and variable winds inland. Forecast for Monday A new high will develop in the far southern Tasman Sea as a trough system moves across South Australia. Some morning drizzle or rain to clear the Southeast Coast early. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over most eastern districts, the tropics and into the Maranoa and Warrego. Fine in the west apart from some high cloud and little or no rain over the Channel Country. Light to moderate E to NE winds on the east coast and mostly light and variable winds inland. Forecast for Tuesday The trough will approach the far southwest of the state while the high over the far southern Tasman Sea will continue to direct moist NE to N winds across the state. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over most of Queensland, tending more isolated in a drier airmass in the far west. Forecast for Wednesday The trough will enter the far southwest of the state while the high over the far southern Tasman Sea will continue to direct moist NE to N winds across the state. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over most of Queensland, tending more isolated west of the trough in the southwest. Forecast for Thursday The trough will be located move through central areas of the state as the high pushes towards New Zealand and the next upstream high approaches WA. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over most of Queensland apart from the southwest. NE to NW winds east of through trough, becoming SW to SE behind the trough. Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday The high will move only slowly east across the Tasman Sea and then to the east of New Zealand. The surface trough will extend from the northwest of the state to the southeast by Saturday. So moist conditions with scattered showers and thunderstorms forecast to the east of the trough, with fine conditions developing over the west of the state in the wake of the trough. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Monday.
