MELBOURNE - Dec 2/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A Severe Weather Warning has been issued for flash flooding for the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Central Coast, Capricornia and northern Maranoa and Warrego forecast districts for today. A Strong Wind Warning has been issued for waters between Yeppoon and Double Island Point, including Hervey Bay, for late tonight. Flood warnings are current for the Bulloo, Thomson, Barcoo, Warrego and Pioneer Rivers, Cooper Creek and the Fitzroy River Basin. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A slow moving high pressure system [1027hPa] over the southern Tasman Sea extends a ridge into the southern Coral Sea. A weak trough lies off the tropical Queensland coast. An upper level trough is moving over western Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Friday Early drizzle areas and isolated showers in the southeast, increasing to rain areas over the southeastern interior and Wide Bay later today. Scattered showers and thunderstorms elsewhere over the state east of about Normanton to Thargomindah, increasing to thundery rain areas over the southern tropics, central districts and the southern interior with moderate to heavy falls. Mostly fine in the west with just the chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms over the eastern Channel Country and far northwest. Cool daytime temperatures over eastern and central parts of the state, particularly over the interior. Mostly moderate SE to NE winds across the state, fresh at times about the coast south of Mackay and over the southeastern interior. Forecast for Saturday The high will weaken over the southern Tasman Sea. The upper level trough is expected to continue moving east, entering the southeastern interior in the evening. Early thundery rain areas with possible moderate to locally heavy falls are therefore expected over central districts south of about St Lawrence, the Maranoa, northern Darling Downs and the Wide Bay, tending to showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon with the continued possibility of some moderate falls. Rain areas should also develop over the Southeast Coast District with some moderate falls, possibly locally heavy about the Sunshine Coast. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere over central districts and the Warrego and also through the northeast tropics. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms over the southern tropical coast. Mostly fine in the west with just the chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms east of about Winton. A surface trough is expected to develop off the Capricorn coast, with SE to NE winds strengthening about the coast between about Yeppoon to Double Island Point as a result. Light to moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, fresh at times along the southern coast. Forecast for Sunday The upper level trough moves east over southeastern districts and is expected to push off the southeast coast by evening. Patchy rain areas continue over the southeastern corner of the state. The upper trough should also generate very unstable conditions over the southeast with possible thunderstorms and moderate falls during the afternoon. Isolated showers and possible thunderstorms also over the Maranoa and Central Highlands. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over the northern tropics. Isolated showers in the weak onshore flow over the southern tropical and central coasts. A low is expected to deepen south of Western Australia and extend a trough towards western Queensland, though mostly fine conditions are expected with just the chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms. The surface trough off the Wide Bay and Fraser Island coast is expected to weaken, easing the strong winds. Forecast for Monday A new high is expected to move into the southern Tasman Sea and extend a ridge over the Coral Sea, maintaining a moist E to NE flow along most of the east coast with generally isolated showers, tending scattered along the southern coast with possible isolated thunderstorms. The deep low south of Western Australia moves a little further east and continues to extend a trough towards western Queensland, with unstable conditions continuing over much of the state. Mostly fine in the west due to continuing dry low levels with just the chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms. Isolated showers elsewhere with isolated thunderstorms, chiefly during the afternoon and evening over the interior. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday The high will remain slow moving over the southern Tasman Sea. The deep low south of Western Australia will most likely move southeast over the Great Australian Bight and weaken. The low will extend a trough into central Australia and this trough will most likely move east, entering southwestern Queensland late Wednesday and moving east into the southern interior on Thursday. Showers and thunderstorms are expected over western and northern Queensland ahead of the trough, more widespread as the trough approaches on Wednesday and Thursday. Isolated to scattered showers over southeastern and central districts in a moist E to NE flow. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Friday.
