Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Dec 1/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Flood warnings are current for the Bulloo, Thomson, Barcoo
Rivers, Cooper Creek and the Warrego River and tributaries.

web site www.bom.gov.au/qld
Weather Situation
A high pressure system [1029 hPa] over the southern Tasman Sea extends a
ridge over the southern Coral Sea. A trough lies off the tropical Queensland
coast, while another trough lies over the central and southern Queensland
interior. An upper level low over northwest New South Wales is moving slowly
south.
Forecast for the rest of Wednesday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the eastern tropics, and central to
southern interior. Scattered showers and light rain at times over the SE corner.
Fine over districts west of Longreach. A cool day over most of the state.
Moderate to locally fresh SE to NE winds over eastern Queensland, shifting light
to moderate SW to SE over the west.
Forecast for Thursday
The inland surface trough is expected to move a little further west as the
high in the Tasman Sea continues to build a ridge along the east Queensland
coast. The upper level low over western New South Wales is expected to continue
moving south as a new upper level trough approaches far western Queensland at
night. Scattered showers over the Capricornia to Southeast Coast easing to
isolated showers in the afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms elsewhere over the
state east of about Normanton to Cunnamulla, with the thunderstorms occurring
chiefly inland. Mostly fine elsewhere with just the chance of isolated showers
and late thunderstorms over the eastern Channel Country and northwest due to the
surface trough shifting west. Light to moderate SW to SE winds in the far west.
Moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere, fresh at times along the southern and central
coasts.
Forecast for Friday
The high will remain slow moving over the Tasman Sea though will start to
weaken later in the day. A surface trough will persist over the far west while
the upper level trough will move over western Queensland. Unstable conditions
should therefore persist through much of the state to the east of the surface
trough, with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms, increasing to
thundery rain areas from the southern tropics through central districts and the
southern interior with possible moderate to locally heavy falls. Isolated
showers and early drizzle areas over the southeast. Mostly fine in the far west
with just the chance of isolated showers or afternoon thunderstorms. Moderate SE
to NE winds across the state, fresh at times along the coast south of about
Bowen.
Forecast for Saturday
The high will continue to weaken over the southern Tasman Sea. The upper
level trough moves east over the state while another trough system is expected
to intensify over the Great Australian Bight. Rain areas and thunderstorms over
the central and the southeast interior east of Charleville, easing from the west
during the day and contracting to the SE coast district as the upper trough
shifts east. Remaining unstable through the tropics with isolated showers and
thunderstorms, chiefly during the afternoon and evening. Mostly fine in the west
with just the chance of isolated afternoon showers. A weak surface trough may
develop off the central and Capricornia coast in response to the upper trough.
The may result in freshening of the E/NE winds along the coast between St.
Lawrence and Double Island Point. Light to moderate SE to NE winds, fresh at
times about the coast south of Bowen.
Forecast for Sunday
The upper trough persists over the SE corner with rain areas and isolated
thunderstorms affecting areas south of Rockhampton and east of Charleville.
Isolated showers and thunderstorms continuing over the tropical coast and
interior north of about Townsville. Isolated showers elsewhere along the east
coast, developing over adjacent inland areas in the afternoon. Mostly fine over
interior parts, except for very isolated afternoon showers over the eastern
parts of the central interior. A weak surface trough system may persist off the
south coast with enhanced shower activity. Light to moderate E/NE winds.
Outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday
The high will remain slow moving and weaken further over the southern Tasman
Sea. A new upper trough system will move eastwards across the Great Australian
Bight with some uncertainty in terms of its extent and influence on Queensland
weather. Overall, the trough may provide enough instability for isolated
afternoon showers and possible thunderstorms to continue over the northern,
central and western parts of the state. Generally isolated showers may persist
about the southeast. Cool daytime temperatures continuing, particularly over the
southern and central interior.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Thursday.
