Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Nov 29/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

Warning Summary at issue time
Flood warnings are current for the Bulloo, Thomson, Barcoo
Rivers, Cooper Creek and the Warrego River and tributaries.

Weather Situation
A high pressure system [1025 hPa] west of Tasmania is moving slowly east and
strengthening. A trough lies off the north tropical Queensland coast, while
another trough lies over the Queensland interior. An intensifying upper level
trough lies over far western Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the northeast tropics with moderate
falls. Areas of rain and thunderstorms from the southern tropical coast into the
central and southern interior east of about Charters Towers to Cunnamulla with
moderate to heavy falls likely. Isolated showers over the far southeast corner
increasing late in the day or at night, with isolated afternoon thunderstorms
possible over the eastern Darling Downs. Fine over the west, apart from the
chance of isolated afternoon showers over the southern Channel Country. A cool
day over most of the interior. Moderate SE to NE winds, shifting SW to SE over
the west.
Forecast for Wednesday
The inland surface trough should move west in response to the ridge
strengthening off the southern Queensland coast. The upper level trough is
expected to tilt towards the southeast, with thundery rain areas  extending over
southeastern parts of the state and central districts with some moderate falls,
possibly locally heavy depending on the intensity of the upper trough. Showers
and storms will continue over the tropics. Showers and isolated storms over
remaining parts east of Normanton to about Quilpie. Fine elsewhere. Moderate SE
to NE winds over the eastern half of the state, freshening about the coast south
of about Bowen as the high intensifies further in the Tasman Sea. Light to
moderate SW to SE winds in the west. Cool daytime temperatures continuing.
Forecast for Thursday
The inland surface trough is expected to move a little further west. The
upper level trough should weaken over the southeast with early thundery rain
areas easing to showers in the afternoon. Some instability persists with
possible isolated afternoon thunderstorms over the southeastern interior.
Showers and thunderstorms elsewhere over the state east of about Burketown to
Cunnamulla, with the thunderstorms occurring chiefly inland. Mostly fine
elsewhere with just the chance of isolated showers and late thunderstorms over
the eastern Channel Country and northwest due to the trough shifting west. Light
to moderate SW to SE winds in the far west. Moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere,
fresh at times along the southern and central coasts.
Forecast for Friday
The high should remain slow moving over the Tasman Sea though will start to
weaken later in the day. A surface trough will persist through far southwestern
Queensland while a new trough system will move over western Queensland. Unstable
conditions should therefore persist through much of the state to the east of the
surface trough, with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms, tending to
thundery rain at times from the southern tropics through the central and
southern interior with possible moderate falls. Isolated showers and early
drizzle areas in the southeast. Mostly fine in the far west with just the chance
of isolated showers or afternoon thunderstorms. Moderate SE to NE winds across
the state, fresh at times along the coast south of about Bowen.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
The high will remain slow moving and weaken further over the southern Tasman
Sea. Another deep trough system over central Australia will most likely move
slowly east over Queensland during the outlook period, though some uncertainty
exists with its movement. A broad area of instability and associated shower and
thunderstorm activity should therefore continue to extend over northern and
central parts of the state and also through the southern interior. Generally
isolated showers persisting about the southeast. Mostly fine in the far west,
though this is dependant on the movement of the trough system. Cool daytime
temperatures continuing, particularly over the southern and central interior.
