Weather Situation
A slow moving high pressure system [1024 hPa] over the southern Tasman Sea
extends a ridge along the east Queensland coast. A surface trough lies over the
interior of Queensland. An intensifying upper level trough lies near the western
border.
Forecast for the rest of Monday
Showers and thunderstorms over the northeast tropics, the central interior,
the Maranoa and western Darling Downs, increasing to thundery rain at times with
some moderate falls. Showers and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere over the
tropics and central districts. Isolated showers over the southeast. Mostly fine
elsewhere with only isolated showers in the Warrego. Mostly moderate SE to NE
winds over eastern districts, tending moderate to fresh S to SE in the west.
Cool daytime temperatures across much of the state.
Forecast for Tuesday
The inland surface trough should will remain slow moving over the interior of
Queensland. The upper level trough will intensify further over western
Queensland and should start to tilt towards central districts. As a result a
band of rain and thunderstorms will extend from the southern tropical coast into
the central and southern interior east of about Charters Towers to Cunnamulla
with moderate to heavy falls likely. Showers and thunderstorms elsewhere over
the tropics with moderate falls continuing, particularly in the northeast.
Isolated showers over the southeastern corner of the state, increasing in the
evening as the upper level trough starts to tilt towards the southeast and a new
high moving into the Tasman Sea strengthens a ridge off the southern Queensland
coast. Possible isolated afternoon thunderstorms over the eastern Darling Downs.
Fine in the west. Daytime temperatures remaining below average over much of the
state, particularly over the southern and central interior.
Forecast for Wednesday
The inland surface trough should move west in response to the ridge
strengthening further off the southern Queensland coast. The upper level trough
is expected to tilt towards the southeast, with thundery rain areas extending
over southeastern parts of the state and central districts with some moderate
falls, possibly locally heavy depending on the intensity of the upper trough.
Showers and storms will continue over the tropics. Showers and isolated storms
over remaining parts east of Normanton to about Quilpie. Fine elsewhere.
Moderate SE to NE winds over the eastern half of the state, freshening about the
coast south of about Bowen as the high intensifies further in the Tasman Sea.
Light to moderate SW to SE winds in the west. Cool daytime temperatures
continuing.
Forecast for Thursday
The inland surface trough is expected to move a little further west. The
upper level trough should weaken over the southeast with early thundery rain
areas easing to showers in the afternoon. Some instability persists with
possible isolated afternoon thunderstorms over the southeastern interior.
Showers and thunderstorms elsewhere over the state east of about Burketown to
Cunnamulla, with the thunderstorms occurring chiefly inland. Mostly fine
elsewhere with just the chance of isolated showers and late thunderstorms over
the eastern Channel Country and northwest due to the trough shifting west. Light
to moderate SW to SE winds in the far west. Moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere,
fresh at times along the southern coast.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The high will persist over the southern Tasman Sea but weaken. The surface
trough will continue to shift slowly west and weaken as new upper trough level
trough approaches western Queensland. Scattered showers and thunderstorms
continuing over the northeast tropics. Scattered showers, rain areas and
isolated thunderstorms over the interior, mainly over central and southern parts
at first and increasing in the west over the weekend. Generally isolated showers
persisting about the southeast. Cool daytime temperatures continuing over
eastern Queensland at least.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Monday.
