Weather Situation
A slow moving high pressure system [1024 hPa] over the southern Tasman Sea
extends a ridge along the east Queensland coast. A surface trough over western
Queensland is moving slowly east. A developing upper level low over western New
South Wales extends a trough west of the Queensland border.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the tropics. Scattered showers,
patchy rain and thunderstorms over the central and southern interior with
moderate falls. Isolated showers and patchy light rain about the east coast
south of St Lawrence. Mostly fine over the far west, only isolated showers.
Moderate SE to NE winds, shifting S'ly over the west of the state.
Forecast for Monday
The high over the southern Tasman Sea will continue to direct moderate SE to
NE winds over eastern Queensland ahead of the near stationary surface trough
lying from the Gulf Country to the southern interior. Scattered showers, rain
areas and thunderstorms with moderate falls east of the trough and west of about
Rockhampton to Texas. Scattered showers east of Rockhampton to Texas. Isolated
showers over the southwest due to the upper trough moving slowly over far
western Queensland. Isolated morning showers and thunderstorms about the
northern Gulf Country. Fine over the Northwest district and northern Channel
Country. A cool day over most of the state.
Forecast for Tuesday
The inland surface trough will remain slow moving from the eastern Gulf
Country to the southern interior, while a new high will develop over the
southern Tasman Sea. Scattered showers, rain areas and thunderstorms with
moderate to locally heavy falls east of the trough but west of about Rockhampton
to Warwick. Showers increasing from the Capricornia to the Southeast Coast, most
likely to rain at times overnight, as the upper trough begins to tilt across the
central and southern interior of the state. The upper low moves over the far
southern Channel Country. Isolated showers over the far southwest due to
lingering moisture as well as instability from the upper level low. Fine over
the western Gulf Country, Northwest district and northern Channel Country.
Moderate SE to NE winds east of the inland surface trough, shifting S to SE to
the west. Cool daytime temperatures continuing.
Forecast for Wednesday
The inland surface trough will continue to lie from about the eastern Gulf
Country to the southern interior, while the high will persist over the southern
Tasman Sea. Scattered showers, rain areas and thunderstorms with moderate to
locally heavy falls over eastern districts to the east of the trough. Showers
tending to rain at times from the Capricornia to the Southeast Coast as the
upper trough tilts across southeast Queensland. Predominantly fine conditions
west of about Longreach and Charleville, only isolated afternoon showers are
possible over the far southwest as the upper level low moves back south again
over western New South Wales. Moderate SE to NE winds east of the inland surface
trough, shifting S to SE to the west. Cool daytime temperatures continuing.
Forecast for Thursday
The inland surface trough is expected to move slowly west over the central
and southern interior as the upper level low over New South Wales weakens and
another upper trough nears the western border. The high will persist over the
southern Tasman Sea. Scattered showers and thunderstorms continuing over the
northeast tropics. Scattered showers, rain areas and isolated thunderstorms over
the central and southern interior east of the trough, though showers gradually
decreasing about the Southeast Coast region. Predominantly fine conditions
continuing over far western Queensland though increasing high cloud from the
next upper trough. Mostly moderate SE to NE winds. Cool daytime temperatures
continuing.
Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday
The high will persist over the southern Tasman Sea but weaken. The surface
trough will continue to shift slowly west and weaken as the new upper trough
over western Queensland begins to move slowly east. Scattered showers and
thunderstorms continuing over the northeast tropics. Scattered showers, rain
areas and isolated thunderstorms over the interior, mainly over central and
southern inland districts. Showers increasing about the tropical coast as a
coastal trough develops. Generally isolated showers persisting about the
southeast. Cool daytime temperatures continuing over eastern Queensland at
least.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Monday.
