Weather Situation
A slow moving high pressure system [1025 hPa] over the southern Tasman Sea
extends a ridge along the east Queensland coast. A surface trough lies over the
far west of the state as an upper level trough approaches southwest
Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Saturday
Rain areas and thunderstorms with moderate to locally heavy falls over
western districts. Scattered showers and thunderstorms about the northern
tropics. Generally isolated showers elsewhere. Moderate SE to NE winds, tending
moderate to fresh and gusty S to SW over the far west.
Forecast for Sunday
The high over the southern Tasman Sea will continue to direct moderate SE to
NE winds over eastern Queensland ahead of the surface trough moving over the
west of the state with moderate S'ly winds in its wake. The surface trough
combined with the upper trough over western Queensland will bring rain areas and
thunderstorms with moderate falls to much of inland Queensland, clearing to
isolated showers over the far west. Isolated showers and thunderstorms about the
tropical coast, with generally isolated showers about the southern coast and
adjacent inland.
Forecast for Monday
The high over the southern Tasman Sea will continue to direct moderate SE to
NE winds over eastern Queensland ahead of the surface trough which is expected
to move slowly east and lie from the Gulf Country to the southern interior.
Scattered showers, rain areas and thunderstorms with moderate falls east of the
trough and west of about Rockhampton to Texas. Scattered showers east of
Rockhampton to Texas. Isolated showers over the southwest due to lingering
instability from the slow moving upper trough over western Queensland. Fine over
the Northwest district and northern Channel Country.
Forecast for Tuesday
The inland surface trough will remain slow moving from the eastern Gulf
Country to the southern interior, while a new high will develop over the
southern Tasman Sea. Scattered showers, rain areas and thunderstorms with
moderate to locally heavy falls east of the trough but west of about Rockhampton
to Warwick. Widespread showers east of Rockhampton to Texas. Isolated showers
over the far southwest due to lingering instability from the slow moving upper
trough over western Queensland. Fine over the western Gulf Country, Northwest
district and northern Channel Country. Moderate SE to NE winds east of the
inland surface trough, shifting S to SE to the west.
Forecast for Wednesday
The inland surface trough will lie from the eastern Gulf Country to the
southern interior as the upper trough remains anchored over western Queensland.
The high will persist over the southern Tasman Sea. Scattered showers, rain
areas and thunderstorms with moderate falls over eastern districts to the east
of the trough, though showers will remain over the southeast coast and Wide Bay
regions. Predominantly fine conditions west of about Longreach and Charleville.
Moderate SE to NE winds east of the inland surface trough, shifting S to SE to
the west.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
The high will persist over the southern Tasman Sea but weaken. The surface
trough will remain slow moving over the eastern Gulf Country, central and
southern interior before shifting west and weakening on the weekend as the upper
trough over western Queensland begins to move slowly east. Further areas of
rain, showers and thunderstorms east of the trough over the northeast tropics
and eastern interior. Moderate falls. Isolated to scattered showers about the
southern coast and adjacent inland. Remaining fine west over far western
Queensland at this stage.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Sunday.
