MELBOURNE - Nov 25/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters between Cardwell and St Lawrence. Flood warnings are current for the Bulloo, Paroo, Thomson, Alice and Barcoo Rivers, the Warrego River and tributaries, Cooper Creek and the Fitzroy River Basin. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A slow moving high pressure system [1027 hPa] over the Tasman Sea extends a weakening ridge along the east Queensland coast. A tropical trough lies over the northern Coral Sea. An upper level trough is approaching southwestern Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Friday Showers and isolated thunderstorms over western districts west of about Charleville and through the tropics, chiefly during the afternoon and evening. Scattered showers over the northeast tropical coast with possible local thunder. Isolated showers elsewhere along the east Queensland coast and over the eastern interior. Fine elsewhere. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds across the state. Forecast for Saturday The high will weaken over the southern Tasman Sea. A deepening low over the northeastern Coral Sea will combine with the high to extend moderate to fresh SE to NE winds along the Queensland east coast. Isolated showers continuing over eastern districts, more widespread in the morning about the northeast tropical coast. A surface trough will enter western Queensland during the day, with NE to NW winds over the interior ahead of the trough, shifting S'ly behind it. The trough increases instability through western and northern Queensland, and combined with the upper level system produces a band of showers and thunderstorms, increasing to thundery rain at times through the Channel Country and Northwest districts with possible moderate falls. Cool daytime temperatures across much of the state, particularly in the southwest. Forecast for Sunday The high will weaken and move over New Zealand while the tropical low will strengthen near Vanuatu. The surface trough shifts further east to extend from the Gulf Country into the Warrego by evening. Moderate SE to NE winds along the east coast, shifting N to NE over the interior ahead of the trough and fresh S'ly behind it. Instability will extend further east, with a band of showers and thunderstorms developing from the tropics into western districts and the central interior, increasing to thundery rain at times due to the presence of the upper level system with possible moderate falls. Becoming fine through far western parts in the drier S'ly flow behind the trough. Isolated showers along the east coast, with patchy rain areas developing over the eastern interior. Cool daytime temperatures under the cloud over the interior. Forecast for Monday The surface trough is expected to move only a little further east. Fine over the southwest in the dry S'ly flow behind the trough. Showers and thundestorms over the tropics and through the central interior and Maranoa ahead of the trough, increasing to thundery rain at times with possible moderate falls. Isolated showers over the southeast coast. Showers and possible isolated late thunderstorms over the central coast and Capricornia. Mostly fine elsewhere with just the chance of isolated showers. Moderate E to NE winds along the coast, shifting N to NE over the interior ahead of the trough. Cool daytime temperatures over the interior. Outlook for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday A high south of Tasmania will move east and reinforce the ridge along the east coast. The surface trough will remain through central Queensland while an upper level low will persist over western New South Wales. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the tropics and interior ahead of the trough. Scattered showers and patchy rain areas elsewhere over eastern Queensland. Fine conditions with S'ly winds over western Queensland. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST Friday.
