Weather Situation
A slow moving high pressure system [1032 hPa] over the Tasman Sea extends a
firm ridge along the east Queensland coast. A surface trough over the far west
of the state. An upper level trough is moving over western Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Tuesday
Scattered showers, patchy rain and thunderstorms over the central interior
and southwest. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the tropics and
northwest Queensland, tending to rain at times about the north tropical coast
with moderate falls. Isolated showers elsewhere, tending scattered about the
Capricornia coast. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds, strong at times along the
east coast between Cardwell and Point Danger.
Forecast for Wednesday
The high will persist over the Tasman Sea though start to weaken later in the
day. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds will extend across the state, strong at
times along the coast between about Cairns and Point Danger though winds will
begin to ease south of Double Island Point later in the day. The upper level
trough is expected to move across the central and southern interior, maintaining
rain areas and isolated thunderstorms through central districts north of
Clermont and along the southern tropical coast with possible moderate falls near
the coast in the strong onshore wind flow. Showers and isolated thunderstorms
elsewhere over the tropics and central interior. Fine in the far west. Isolated
showers elsewhere, tending scattered along the southern coast. Cool daytime
temperatures continuing.
Forecast for Thursday
The high will remain slow moving over the Tasman Sea and weaken further. A
deepening surface trough over the northern Coral Sea should combine with the
high however and maintain moderate to fresh SE to NE winds across the state,
strong along the coast between about Cairns and Fraser Island. The upper level
trough is expected to move off the coast later in the day. Scattered showers
will continue along the east coast in the moist onshore wind flow, more
widespread about the tropical east and central coasts with possible isolated
thunderstorms and moderate falls. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over
remaining parts of the tropics. Isolated showers over the eastern and central
interior. Mostly fine elsewhere, though late showers and thunderstorms may
affect the far southwest due to another upper trough approaching late in the
day. Daytime temperatures remaining below average over much of the state.
Forecast for Friday
The high over the southern Tasman Sea combined with the low pressure system
over the northern Coral Sea will maintain moderate to fresh SE to NE winds
across the state. Scattered showers will continue about the east coast in the
moist onshore wind flow, tending isolated over the eastern and central interior.
The upper level trough over southwestern Queensland moves a little further east,
increasing instability over the Channel Country with isolated showers and
possible thunderstorms. Isolated showers and thunderstorms also over northern
Cape York Peninsula and along the Gulf of Carpentaria coast. Daytime
temperatures remaining below average over central and southern parts of the
state.
Forecast for Saturday
The high will weaken over the southern Tasman Sea while the low pressure
system over the northern Coral Sea will most likely deepen. Moderate SE to NE
winds across the state, fresh along the east coast. Scattered showers will
continue about the east coast in the moist onshore wind flow, tending isolated
over the eastern interior. The upper level trough moves slowly east over western
Queensland. This combines with a surface trough over this areas to maintain
unstable conditions and a band of showers and thunderstorms from the Gulf
Country to the western Warrego. Isolated showers and thunderstorms also over
northern Cape York Peninsula and along the western Gulf of Carpentaria coast.
Daytime temperatures remaining below average over central and southern parts of
the state.
Outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
The high will remain slow moving over the Tasman Sea and continue to weaken,
while the low pressure system over the northern Coral Sea will most likely move
east or southeast away from Queensland and continue to deepen. Fresh E to SE
winds will continue along the east coast, tending NE to NW over the interior
ahead of the surface trough over western Queensland moving slowly east. This
trough will dominate Queensland's weather during the outlook period, with the
band of showers and thunderstorms over western Queensland moving east and
reaching the eastern interior on Monday. Fine with gusty S'ly winds developing
over western Queensland in the wake of the trough. Showers will continue over
eastern districts in the moist onshore wind flow.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Wednesday.
