MELBOURNE - Nov 21/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
Warning Summary at issue time A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters between Mackay and Double Island Point, including Hervey Bay. A strong wind warning has been issued for coastal waters between Cardwell and Mackay for Monday. A strong wind warning has been issued for coastal waters between Double Island Point and Cape Moreton for Monday night. Flood warnings are current for the Bulloo, Paroo, Thomson and Barcoo Rivers. For the latest warning information please check the Bureau's web site www.bom.gov.au/qld Weather Situation A high [1028 hPa] over the Tasman Sea extends a firm ridge along the east Queensland coast. A weak surface trough lies offshore of the Queensland east tropical coast. An upper level trough is located over western Queensland. Forecast for the rest of Sunday Areas of rain and thunderstorms in a band extending from the tropical coast into the central interior and southwest. Moderate to locally heavy falls, particularly on the central coast and in the Channel Country. Isolated showers and thunderstorms over remaining western and northern parts, tending scattered over the far northern tropics. Mostly fine though cloudy in the southeast with only patchy rain areas. Moderate to fresh SE winds along the east coast, strong in areas between Mackay and Double Island Point. Mostly moderate SE to NE winds over the interior. Forecast for Monday The high over the Tasman Sea is expected to remain near stationary and intensify, extending moderate to fresh E to SE winds along the east coast, strong at times between about Bowen and Double Island Point, extending north to Cardwell later in the day. The upper level trough over western Queensland will intensify, while a weak surface trough will most likely persist off the tropical east coast. A band of rain and thunderstorms should extend from the central coast into the central interior and southwest with some moderate falls. Isolated showers over the southeast, tending scattered along the exposed coast. Isolated showers and thunderstorms elsewhere, more widespread over the northeast tropics. Daytime temperatures below average over most of the state. Mostly moderate SE to NE winds over the interior. Forecast for Tuesday The high over the Tasman Sea is expected to strengthen further, extending fresh SE to NE winds over the state, strong along the east Queensland coast between about Cardwell and Point Danger. The upper trough is expected to move east over western districts. Rain areas will most likely occur about the central and southern tropical coasts due to the upper trough and the strong onshore flow. Isolated to scattered showers elsewhere along the east coast, with possible thunderstorms in the tropics. Isolated showers over the southeast interior. Showers and isolated thunderstorms elsewhere, with early thundery rain through the southwest. Daytime temperatures remaining below average over most of the state. Forecast for Wednesday The high will persist over the Tasman Sea though start to weaken later in the day. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds will extend over the state, strong at times along the coast between about Cairns and Point Danger. The upper level trough is expected to move across the central interior. Rain areas with possible moderate to heavy falls should therefore continue about the central and southern tropical coasts due to the upper trough and strong onshore flow. Showers and isolated thunderstorms over the northeast tropics. Isolated showers elsewhere, tending scattered about the southern coast. Cool daytime temperatures continuing. Forecast for Thursday The high will remain slow moving over the Tasman Sea and weaken further. A surface trough over the northern Coral Sea should combine with the high however and maintain moderate to fresh SE to NE winds across the state, possibly strong along the central and Capricorn coasts. The upper level trough is expected to move off the Capricorn coast later in the day, contracting the rain areas offshore. Scattered showers will continue along the east coast in the moist onshore wind flow, more isolated over the eastern interior. Possible isolated thunderstorms over the tropics. Mostly fine elsewhere with only isolated afternoon showers. Daytime temperatures remaining below average over much of the state. Outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday The upper level trough will most likely remain slow moving over the central or southern Coral Sea. The high will persist over the Tasman Sea and weaken, though the combination of the high and a surface trough over the northern Coral Sea should maintain fresh E to SE winds along the east Queensland coast, possibly strong over central and Capricornia waters. Scattered showers will persist along the east coast in the moist onshore flow, tending isolated inland. A new upper trough should approach southwestern Queensland on Saturday, producing showers and storms over far western parts on Saturday before shifting east on Sunday and extending a band of showers and thunderstorms from the tropics into the southern interior. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST Monday.
