Weather Situation
A surface trough lies over the central and southern Queensland interior. A
high [1027 hPa] over the Great Australian Bight is extending a ridge along the
New South Wales and far southern Queensland coast. An upper level trough is
developing over western Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Fine over western Queensland. Scattered showers and thunderstorms over the
eastern tropics, tending to rain at night. Isolated showers and thunderstorms
over the central and southeast interior and also about the Wide Bay and Burnett.
Isolated showers about the southeast coast. Light to moderate SE to NE winds,
tending moderate to fresh S to SE along the southern coast.
Forecast for Saturday
The surface inland trough should drift a little further west, closer to the
developing upper level trough. This will extend showers and thunderstorms
further west over the tropical and central interior. Further showers and inland
thunderstorms over the eastern tropics, with areas of rain during the morning
and again at night. Showers about the remaining east coast, with generally only
isolated showers over the southeast interior. A cool day over most of the state.
Fresh to strong S to SE winds along the central to southern coast. Mostly
moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Sunday
The high is expected to move east into the Tasman Sea by late in the day. The
inland surface trough is expected to move west over the Channel Country, while
the upper trough will continue to intensify over western Queensland. This should
result in further showers and thunderstorms over western districts, the Gulf
Country and western Cape York Peninsula. Showers about the east coast, more
widespread along the tropical coast with morning patchy rain over the eastern
interior. Afternoon showers over the central interior. Fine over the southeast
interior. Daytime temperatures below average over most of the state. Moderate to
fresh SE winds along the east coast, strong about parts of the tropical coast.
Mostly moderate SE to NE winds over the interior.
Forecast for Monday
The high over the Tasman Sea is expected to remain near stationary. The
inland surface trough is expected to move west of the border and weaken. The
upper level trough over western Queensland will intensify into an upper level
low and maintain showers and thunderstorms over western Queensland. Showers and
thunderstorms will also continue over the Gulf Country and western Cape York
Peninsula. Showers about the east coast, more widespread along the north
tropical coast. Afternoon showers over the central interior. Fine over the
southeast interior. Daytime temperatures below average over most of the state. A
trough may begin to deepen over the northern Coral Sea. Moderate to fresh SE
winds along the east coast, strong along the central and Capricornia coasts.
Mostly moderate SE to NE winds over the interior.
Forecast for Tuesday
The high over the Tasman Sea is expected to strengthen a little, maintaining
fresh to locally strong SE winds and showers about the east coast. More
widespread showers about the tropical coast. The upper trough and low is
expected to move east over the southern and central Queensland interior, with
generally isolated afternoon showers over most of the Queensland interior. The
upper trough will also assist in deepening the trough over the northern Coral
Sea, possibly with a weak tropical low developing. Isolated thunderstorms over
western Cape York Peninsula. Daytime temperatures remaining below average over
most of the state. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds, remaining strong along the
central and Capricornia coasts.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
The upper level trough and low is likely to remain slow moving over eastern
Queensland while the trough and/or low pressure system over the northern Coral
Sea is likely to persist. The high will remain slow moving over the Tasman Sea
and continue to extend a firm ridge along the east Queensland coast with fresh
to locally strong SE winds and showers. Isolated showers over the eastern
interior. Isolated thunderstorms over western Cape York Peninsula.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Saturday.
