Weather Situation
A slow moving high [1030 hPa] north of New Zealand extends a ridge along the
Queensland east coast. An upper level trough is moving east over western
districts. A surface trough extends over western Queensland.
Forecast for the rest of Sunday
Showers and thunderstorms over much of northern and western Queensland with
moderate to locally heavy falls east of about Cloncurry. Showers and isolated
thunderstorms over central parts north of about Clermont. Isolated showers
elsewhere. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds along the east coast, tending NW to
NE over the interior ahead of a S'ly change extending over the Channel
Country.
Forecast for Monday
The upper trough is forecast to move east, extending from the central coast
into the southeastern interior by evening. Showers and thunderstorms continue
across much of northern and western Queensland due to the upper trough, but ease
through the far west and extend into the southern central interior and
southwestern Darling Downs as the trough shifts east. Moderate to locally heavy
falls are likely, chiefly through the tropics and the Maranoa and Warrego and
Central West Districts. Mostly fine over remaining southeastern parts and the
Capricornia with only isolated showers. The high will remain slow moving over
the northern Tasman Sea and extend mostly moderate SE to NE winds along the east
coast. Light to moderate NE to NW winds over the interior, tending S'ly in the
west.
Forecast for Tuesday
The upper trough is expected to persist over the interior while a new upper
trough approaches the southwest. Showers and thunderstorms over the southern and
central interior due to instability associated with the troughs, tending to rain
at times with moderate to locally heavy falls. Isolated showers over the east
coast and adjacent inland south of about Mackay. Showers and isolated
thunderstorms elsewhere. Moderate to fresh SE to NE winds along the coast,
tending N'ly along the southern coast. A surface trough extends from the Gulf
Country into the southeastern interior, with NE to NW winds ahead of the trough,
tending moderate to fresh SW to SE behind the trough.
Forecast for Wednesday
The upper trough over southwestern Queensland will most likely intensify and
move east over western parts, producing a band of rain and thunderstorms from
the tropics into the central and southeastern interior with moderate to locally
heavy falls. Showers about the central and southeast coast should increase to
thundery rain later in the day as the trough shifts east. A surface trough will
extend over the eastern interior, with light to moderate NE to NW winds ahead of
the trough, shifting cooler S to SE behind the trough.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday
The upper trough will most likely move slowly east over the state on Thursday
with thundery rain and locally heavy falls over the eastern half. The trough is
expected to move off the tropical coast but still extend into the southern
interior on Friday and Saturday, with thundery rain continuing over southern
districts but easing in the tropics.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:10 pm EST
Sunday.
