Weather Situation
A near stationary high over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge and moist SE to NE
winds along the east coast of Queensland. An upper level trough extends over
western Queensland and will move slowly east and weaken later today.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Showers and thunderstorms with moderate to possibly locally heavy falls over
the tropical and central interior, the Channel Country and along the Herbert and
Lower Burdekin and Northeast Tropical coasts. Isolated showers and possible
thunderstorms elsewhere over northern and western Queensland. Isolated showers
over the southeast corner of the state. Mostly moderate SE to NE winds along the
east coast, tending NW to NE over the interior.
Forecast for Saturday
A new upper trough will move over central Australia, approaching our far
southwestern border late in the day. The high will remain near stationary over
the Tasman Sea, extending moderate to fresh SE to NE winds along the east coast,
tending NE to NW over the interior. Conditions will remain unstable with
scattered showers and thunderstorms over much of the interior. Moderate to
locally heavy falls are most likely through the Channel Country closest to the
approaching trough. Showers and isolated thunderstorms over Cape York Peninsula
and the east tropical coast south of about Cairns. Isolated showers over the
southeastern corner of the state, more scattered over the Capricornia.
Forecast for Sunday
The new upper trough is forecast to move over western Queensland while the
high in the Tasman Sea remains slow moving. Moderate SE to NE winds will
continue along the east coast, with moderate NW to NE winds inland ahead of a
S'ly change moving over the Channel Country. Showers and thunderstorms over much
of northern and western Queensland due to the upper trough, with moderate to
locally heavy falls east of Mount Isa. Showers and thunderstorms decreasing
over the southwest in the afternoon as the trough moves east. Mostly fine over
the southeastern corner of the state under the influence of the ridge with only
isolated showers.
Forecast for Monday
The upper trough is forecast to move east, extending from the central coast
into the southeastern interior by evening. Showers and thunderstorms continue
across much of northern and western parts due to the upper trough, but ease
through the far west and extend into the southern central interior and
southwestern Darling Downs as the trough shifts east. Moderate to locally heavy
falls are likely, chiefly through the Maranoa and Warrego and Central West
districts. Isolated showers over remaining southeastern parts and the
Capricornia. Mostly moderate SE to NE winds along the east coast, tending NE to
NW over the eastern interior. Light to moderate S to SE winds elsewhere.
Forecast for Tuesday
The upper trough will most likely persist over the southeast interior while a
new trough approaches the southwest. Showers and isolated thunderstorms over
the central and southern interior due to instability associated with the
troughs. Isolated showers over northern districts and along the east coast, with
possible isolated thunderstorms north of about Mackay. Fine in the northwest.
Moderate SE to NE winds along the east coast, tending SE to NE over the
interior.
Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
The upper trough in the southwest will move east over southern Queensland,
with showers and thunderstorms originally over central and southern parts most
likely contracting into eastern and northern Queensland on Thursday and Friday.
Becoming fine further west in the wake of the trough.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:45 am EST
Saturday.
