Weather Situation
A strong cold front will move over the Tasman Sea tonight. Rain , with locally heavy falls west of the Divide will tend to showers behind the front and clear from northwestern and coastal parts of the state on Saturday, although some further showers can be expected over the southern inland and on the western slopes of the ranges, most likely about central and southern parts. Strong to gale force winds are expected in parts ahead of and behind the front. Significantly colder air after the front is expected to lead to snow developing overnight Friday/Saturday on the western slopes of the Snowy Mountains district and the Southern and Central Tablelands. Another high pressure system is expected to extend a ridge across the state on Sunday in the wake of the front, resulting in mostly fine conditions Sunday and Monday.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Areas of rain with possible heavy falls about the slopes and western ranges, tending patchy along most of the coast. Showers over the remaining southern inland. Fresh to strong northerly winds in the east. Fresh to strong west to southwest winds over the remainder extending to the coast during the evening..
Forecast for Saturday
Scattered showers on the western slopes of the southern and central ranges, tending more isolated further north and and along the southern border districts. Showers falling as snow down to about 700 metres about the Snowy Mountain district and to about 900 metres on the Central Tablelands. Mostly fine elsewhere. Cool to cold fresh to strong west to southwest winds.
Forecast for Sunday
Isolated showers about the Southern inland, falling as snow on the Alps at first. Fine elsewhere. West to southwest winds.
Forecast for Monday
Isolated showers on the far southern slopes of the western ranges. Mostly west to southwest winds
Forecast for Tuesday
Isolated showers along the coast, more scattered about central parts of the coast. South to southeast winds.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EDT Saturday.
