Weather Situation
A strong cold front approaching from the west is expected to interact with cloud over the centre of the continent to bring significant rain to the state today. Locally heavy falls are expected on west of the Divide. The rain will clear as the front passes through later Friday or early Saturday, with showers persisting on the ranges and southwest inland with the chance of thunderstorms in the colder southwesterly airstream following the front. Strong to gale force winds are also expected in parts ahead of and behind the front. Significantly colder air after the front is expected to lead to snow developing overnight Friday/Saturday on the western slopes of the southern and central tablelands, down to low levels. Another high pressure system is expected to extend a ridge across the state on Sunday in the wake of the front.
Forecast for the rest of Friday
Areas of rain and the chance of thunderstorms, with possible heavy falls west of the Divide contracting eastwards and clearing from the northwest, but showers and possible thunderstorms continuing over the southern inland. Strengthening gusty northerly winds ahead of a cold fresh to strong southwesterly change spreading through the southwest and reaching the south coast in the afternoon.
Forecast for Saturday
Isolated showers on the western slopes of the southern and central ranges and along the southern inland border districts. Showers falling as snow down to low levels, down to about 600 metres about the Snowy Mountain district grading to about 700 metres on the Central Tablelands. Fine elsewhere. Cool to cold west to southwest winds, fresh to strong in the southeast.
Forecast for Sunday
Isolated showers about the Southern inland, falling as snow on the Alps at first. Fine elsewhere. West to southwest winds.
Forecast for Monday
Isolated showers on the far southern slopes of the western ranges. Mostly west to southwest winds
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EDT Friday.
