Weather Situation
A high pressure system over the southern Tasman Sea extends a ridge to the north coast. An upper level trough moving through the east of New South Wales is expected to weaken over the northeast during Thursday. A strong cold front approaching from the west is expected to interact with cloud over the centre of the continent to bring significant rain to the state. The rain is expected to move into the northwest later today then to the remainder on Friday ahead of the cold front. Locally heavy falls are expected on Friday west of the Divide. The rain will clear as the front passes through later Friday or early Saturday, with showers persisting on the southwest slopes of the ranges in the colder southwesterly airstream following the front. Strong to gale force winds are also expected in parts ahead of and behind the front. Another high pressure system is expected to extend a ridge across the state on Sunday in the wake of the front.
Forecast for the rest of Thursday
Areas of rain in the east, contracting further northeast during the day. Further rain developing in the northwest in the afternoon. Isolated thunderstorms in the north. Northeast to northwest winds.
Forecast for Friday
Areas of rain and the chance of thunderstorms, with possible heavy falls west of the Divide, clearing from the west later. Snow developing above 1000 metres in the south in the evening. Strengthening northerly winds ahead of a cold fresh to strong southwesterly change reaching the south coast in the afternoon.
Forecast for Saturday
Isolated showers on the western slopes of the southern ranges. Fine elsewhere. Cool to cold west to southwest winds, fresh to strong in the southeast.
Forecast for Sunday
Isolated showers on the Alps. Fine elsewhere. West to southwest winds.
The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 pm EDT Thursday.
