U.S. Canola Crop Soars

WASHINGTON - Oct 8/10 - SNS -- Canola production In the United States is forecast for 2010 is 2.53 billion pounds, up 72% from 2009, according to the latest USDA crop production esimates.

Area planted, at 1.45 million acres, is down 5% from the June estimate but up 75% from last year. Canola farmers expect to harvest 1.42 million acres, down 5% from June but up 74% from 2009.

The October yield forecast, at 1,786 pounds per acre, is 25 pounds below last year's yield. If realized, this will be the second highest yield for the United States on record.

The yield in North Dakota, the largest canola-producing State, is forecast at 1,810 pounds per acre, down 30 pounds from last year's record yield. Crop development in North Dakota progressed ahead of last year but in line with the 5-year average pace. Warm, dry weather throughout August aided crop development. Harvest lagged slightly behind the normal pace during August and September but reached 95% complete by October 3.
