Weather Situation A strong high pressure system centred over New Zealand extends a ridge to the New South Wales coast. This ridge will weaken later today as a trough and associated cold front move into the state's west. Unsettled conditions are expected to accompany the passage of this system across southern and western districts today, shifting to central and northern parts during Thursday. Behind this, a cooler and drier airmass will spread across the state as another ridge pushes across from the west, with any lingering showers becoming confined to the northeast by Friday. Much of the state is likely to experience fairly clear skies through the weekend as the high becomes dominant, although the presence of a weak trough over the northeast may see some shower activity sustained there. Forecast for the rest of Wednesday Isolated showers about the coast and ranges. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms over the southern and western inland, clearing from the far southwest later. Northeast winds near the coast, becoming fresh in thesouth. Northeast to northwest winds inland, with a gusty southerly change developing in the southwest. Forecast for Thursday Showers and possible thunderstorms over central parts, extending to the northeast later. Early fog patches in the east. A cool, fresh southerly change extending throughout, strong and gusty near the southern coast. Forecast for Friday Isolated showers and the chance of afternoon thunderstorms in the northeast. Mostly sunny over the remainder. South to southeast winds. Forecast for Saturday Isolated showers in the northeast, tending scattered near the Queensland border. Mostly sunny over the remainder. Southeasterly to easterly winds throughout. Forecast for Sunday Isolated showers in the east, particularly the north coast, and possibly about the far northwest. East to northeast winds, fresh on the north coast. The next routine forecast will be issued at 4:30 am EDT Thursday. * Calls to 1300 numbers cost around 27.5c incl.
