MELBOURNE - Sep 18/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
IDQ1070001 WARNING SUMMARY Nil. STATE FORECAST for Saturday night and Sunday Cloudy and cool with rain areas over western and southern Queensland. Moderate to possible heavy falls about the Channel Country today and early Sunday, contracting to the central and southern interior from Sunday. Isolated afternoon showers and storms over tropical interior, tending to rain areas tonight. Scattered showers over the tropical coast tending to rain areas by late Sunday. Moderate E to NE winds over the tropics with moderate SE winds elsewhere. EXTENDED OUTLOOK Monday: The upper trough will drift eastwards resulting in the cloud and rain band clearing the west of the state. However, over eastern and central areas further rain will occur while showers and storms will continue over Cape York Peninsula. A surface trough and low will develop off the Central and Capricornia coasts and will result in the moderate to heavy falls becoming focused about these districts and the adjacent inland. Strong winds will occur during the morning about the southern Gulf of Carpentaria. Tuesday: The upper level trough will remain near stationary and will therefore maintain the cloud and rain band over eastern and central Qld. The surface low and trough will move southwards along the coast. Moderate to hear rain areas will shift offshore, while mostly light rain over the eastern districts with tend to showers during the day. The next upper trough will amplify over South Australia causing the rain areas to shift westwards once more to the central and southern interior. Possible storms will occur over the far northern tropics. Wednesday: The upper trough will cause the cloud and rain band over the eastern half of the state to intensify with moderate to heavy falls developing once again over the eastern districts, mainly south of Rockhampton. Scattered showers and some rain areas will occur over the northeast tropics, while a surface trough over the interior may cause isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday: The upper level trough will gradually weaken during this period and slip to the south-east. As a result the cloud and rain band will continue over the eastern districts till Friday morning, then clear the coast in the afternoon. A low will develop off the far northern NSW coast in response to the movement of the upper trough and will help to drive drier S to SE winds across much of the southern half of the state on Saturday. Isolated showers will continue over the tropical coast in the weekend, with a chance of afternoon showers and storms over the interior.
