MELBOURNE - Sep 17/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
IDQ1070001 WARNING SUMMARY Nil. STATE FORECAST for Saturday Cloudy and cool with rain areas over most southern and western areas of the state. Some moderate to heavy falls likely about the south-west. Isolated showers and storms developing over the central interior and the north-west of the state. Increasing showers over much of the eastern and far northern tropics. Moderate SE to NE winds over the tropics with moderate S to SE winds elsewhere. EXTENDED OUTLOOK Sunday: The upper level trough over central Australia will sharpen a little and drift eastwards resulting in the cloud and rain band clearing eastwards across the south-west of the state. The surface trough over the interior will sharpen in response to the upper system. As a result a good scattering of moderate to heavy falls of rain will develop over most eastern inland areas. Showers and storms will continue over Cape york Peninsula. Monday: The upper trough will drift eastwards resulting in the cloud and rain band clearing the west of the state. However, over eastern and central areas further rain will occur while showers and storms will continue over Cape York Peninsula. A surface trough and low will develop off the Central and Capricornia coasts and will result in the moderate to heavy falls becoming focused about these districts and the adjacent inland. Some strong winds may also develop over these coastal waters by late in the day. Strong winds will occur during the morning about the southern Gulf of Carpentaria. Tuesday: The upper level trough will remain near stationary and will therefore maintain the cloud and rain band over eastern and central Qld. The surface low and trough will move inland and weaken. Consequently, the area of moderate to heavy falls of rain will contract in size during the day. Possible strong winds will occur about the Capricornia coast in the morning. Strong winds will also occur about the southern Gulf of Carpentaria in the morning. Showers and/or storms will continue over the far northern tropics. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday: The upper level trough will gradually weaken during this period and slip to the south-east. As a result the cloud and rain band will finally clear the coast during Thursday or Friday morning. A low will develop off the far northern NSW coast in response to the movement of the upper trough and will help to drive drier S to SE winds across much of the state during Friday.
