Australia -- Queensland Weather Update

MELBOURNE - Sep 8/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.

IDQ1070001
WARNING SUMMARY
1. A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters between Torres Strait and
Cape Flattery for the morning.
2. Flood warnings are current for the Comet and Dawson Rivers.
STATE FORECAST
for Thursday
Isolated showers about the east coast north of about the Yeppoon area and
exposed parts of the southern coast. Cloudy with patchy rain areas over most
southern border districts clearing from the far south-west corner during the
evening. Some moderate falls likely about southern inland border parts. Moderate
to fresh SE winds across the far northern tropics. Light to moderate E to N
winds elsewhere before a S'ly change spreading across the south-west during the
afternoon and evening. A few showers and storms near the change.
EXTENDED OUTLOOK
Friday: The upper trough responsible for the rainband will move further
eastwards, drawing the rain areas into the southeast and central districts.
Some moderate falls are possible about the Darling Downs during the morning,
before the rainband moves north-eastwards as it weakens. The surface trough will
move into the eastern tropics and off the southern coast during the afternoon
and evening. A few showers and storms will occur near the trough over the
eastern tropics. Isolated showers will continue along most of the east tropical
coast in the onshore flow.
Saturday: A new high pressure system will move across South Australia and
circulate dry SW to SE winds across southern and central Qld. The surface trough
will decay on the north tropical coast but will still enhance showers and
drizzle about the east tropical coast and the adjacent inland north of about the
Mackay area. SE trade winds will again become quite fresh about the east coast
north of cooktown by late in the day.
Sunday: The high will move off the coast by late in the day and begin to weaken
as a new upper trough moves into the Great Australian Bight. So winds will
remain mostly moderate to fresh alon the east tropical coast with showers north
of about Bowen. Middle to high cloud with some patchy light rain will spread
across the south-west of the state during the day in response to the approaching
upper trough. A frontal system will move into central Australia.
The outlook for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday: The high will continue to move
eastwards and weaken as the frontal system moves off the southern coast early
Tuesday morning. So winds will ease along the east coast during Monday and shift
warm N'ly over the south-east of the state. The upper trough will move off the
coast on Tuesday resulting in the cloud and rain band moving to the north-east
and weakening. By Wednesday dry SW to SE winds will again circulate across most
southern and western areas of the state. The only rainfall will be from showers
about the east coast north of about the Cardwell area.
