IDQ1070001
WARNING SUMMARY
1. A strong wind warning is current for Gulf of Carpentaria waters north of
Weipa.
2. A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters between Torres Strait and
Cape Flattery.
3. Flood warnings are current for the Comet and Dawson Rivers.
STATE FORECAST
for Tuesday night and Wednesday
Isolated showers over the far northern and north-east tropics and developing
along exposed parts of the remaining east coast during the day. High cloud
increasing over the south-west but with little or no rain. Fine elsewhere. Light
to moderate SE winds over the southern half of the state with moderate to fresh
SE winds over the tropics.
EXTENDED OUTLOOK
Thursday: The ridge will continue to weaken and move northwards with winds
easing further along the east coast. Showers will continue to decrease over the
north-east tropics and generally become confined to the east coast and adjacent
inland. The cloud band over the south-west will spread eastwards and thicken
with rain increasing over southern inland border districts. Some moderate falls
will develop. A surface trough will also move across western areas of the state
with SW to S winds following. Isolated storms will occur on and near the trough.
Friday: The cloud and rainband will move into central areas of the state by the
evening in a weakening mode as the surface trough moves off the southern coast
during the afternoon and evening. Isolated thunderstorms will occur on and near
the surface trough especially about central areas of the state. In the wake of
the cloud band gusty W to SW winds will develop over the south-east corner of
the state in the afternoon. Isolated showers will continue along parts of the
east tropical coast in the onshore stream. A new high will move into South
Australia.
Saturday: The cloud and rain band will decay early over central areas of the
state. The surface trough will move into the south-east tropics and then split
with the northern section moving westwards as the inland trough and the southern
section continuing to move seawards. As a result, the high will move into
northern NSW and extend a firm ridge along the east coast. So moderate to fresh
SE winds will continue across the northern tropics with isolated stream showers
occurring along the east coast north of about the Cairns area. Winds will be
mostly light to moderate SE elsewhere across the state. Isolated showers mainly
in the afternoon will occur about the south-east tropics.
The outlook for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday: The high will continue to move
eastwards with the ridge along the east coast weakening and moving northwards
during Sunday and Monday as a new frontal system moves across the state and off
the coast during Monday. Hot N to NW winds will precede the front over the
south-east of the state on Monday. Cooler gusty SW to SE winds will spread
across most of the state in the wake of the front. A new cloud band will move
into the south-west on Sunday and across the south-east on Monday. Indications
are that only patchy light rain at best will occur with the cloud. Isolated
showers along the east coast north of about the Cardwell area.
