MELBOURNE - Sep 5/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
IDQ1070001 WARNING SUMMARY Strong wind warning for southeast Gulf of Carpentaria waters this morning. Strong wind warning for northern Gulf waters north of Weipa for Tuesday. Strong wind warning for coastal waters between Torres Strait and Cooktown for this afternoon. Flood warnings for the Dumaresq, lower Macintyre, Nogoa, Comet and Dawson Rivers. STATE FORECAST for Monday Cloudy with rain areas extending from the northwest into central and southeast districts, clearing the southeast by the afternoon and becoming patchy through remaining areas. Moderate to locally heavy falls about the central interior southeast of Clermont, the Wide Bay and Burnett and Sunshine Coast early this morning. Drizzle areas and isolated showers over the tropics, with isolated thunderstorms over the tropical interior and northern Gulf Country. Fine over the southwest. Fresh SE winds through the northern tropics. Cool with moderate SW to SE winds elsewhere, fresh at times in the northwest. EXTENDED OUTLOOK Tuesday: A patchy light rain band will weaken over northwest and central parts of the state during the day as an upper trough moves off the east coast. Another upper trough will approach the southwest, increasing high cloud through the Channel Country though with little or no rain. A high will move southeast over Victoria into the Tasman Sea, maintaining strong SE winds about the north tropical coast. Isolated showers and drizzle areas continuing in the moist SE to NE flow over the eastern tropics and Cape York Peninsula. Remaining cool south of the tropics. Wednesday: The high will move over the far southern Tasman Sea and extend a ridge across most of Queensland. Isolated showers along much of the east coast and adjacent inland in the onshore airstream, with morning drizzle areas over the eastern tropics. Isolated showers also possibly developing through the northwest in the afternoon. Fresh to strong SE winds over the northern tropics. The patchy high cloud dissipates early over western parts of the state as the upper trough moves east. However, high cloud will increase once again through southwestern Queensland later in the day as yet another upper trough approaches the Great Australian Bight. Thursday: A ridge will persist along the tropical east coast with isolated showers along much of the east coast and adjacent inland in the onshore airstream. Fresh to strong SE winds continuing over the northern tropics. The upper trough moves over the Great Australian Bight, extending a thundery rain band east over the southern interior of Queensland. A surface trough is also expected to move into western Queensland late in the day, increasing instability with possible isolated late thunderstorms developing through western parts. The outlook for Friday, Saturday and Sunday: The thundery rain band is expected to move across southern and southeast districts on Friday, most likely in a weakening mode as the upper trough slips further southeast over southeastern Australia. Isolated showers about the tropical coast and central interior. The surface trough is expected to move across the state and then north along the east coast overnight Friday or during Saturday morning. Drier air extends over western and southern Queensland over the weekend in the wake of the trough, clearing the rain. However, isolated showers are likely to continue about the east coast north of Fraser Island and central districts, as well as over far northern Cape York Peninsula.
