MELBOURNE - Sep 3/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
IDQ1070001 WARNING SUMMARY Strong wind warning for coastal waters between Torres Strait and Cooktown. STATE FORECAST for Friday night and Saturday Isolated showers about the tropical coast and southeast today. Patchy thundery rain over the west and southern interior, spreading northeast into the central and southeast interior during Saturday. Rain and storms increasing over the Channel Country overnight with moderate to heavy falls, easing during Saturday. Showers and thunderstorms over the northern tropics Saturday afternoon and evening, increasing to rain at times about the north tropical coast with moderate falls. Moderate to fresh E to SE winds over northern Queensland. Moderate to fresh and gusty NE to NW winds elsewhere, ahead of a W to SW change extending across western Queensland tonight and during Saturday. EXTENDED OUTLOOK Sunday: The thundery rainband should extend from the northwest across central districts, and then over the southeast of the state. Moderate to locally heavy falls are possible about parts of the Central West, Central Highlands, Capricornia, Wide Bay, Burnett and northern Darling Downs. A cold day under the cloud with a cooler morning in the west in the wake of the cloud band. Showers over the western Gulf Country due to SE winds. Scattered showers and thunderstorms elsewhere over the northern tropics, tending to more widespread showers or rain at times about the north tropical coast and ranges. Monday: The weakening thundery rainband will persist from the northwest across central districts and over the southeast of the state, as another upper trough moves over New South Wales. Moderate to locally heavy falls possible over central districts associated with a surface trough, but easing during the day. Another cold day under the cloud. More isolated showers about the tropical coast, scattered about the north tropical coast. Increasing SE winds over the northern tropics as a new high moves into southeast Australia. Tuesday: The patchy rain band over northwest and central districts will dissipate during the day. The high will strengthen over southeast Australia. The surface trough will move along the north tropical coast with scattered showers continuing and isolated showers along the remaining coast and Cape York Peninsula. Remaining cool over western, southern and central Queensland. The outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday: Most of the state should be fine on Wednesday, except for isolated showers along the east coast. Another thundery rain band is likely to affect the southwest on Thursday associated with the next upper trough moving over SA. This rain band is forecast to move across western and southern inland Queensland during Friday but also weaken.
