MELBOURNE - Aug 29/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
IDQ1070001 WARNING SUMMARY A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters between Lockhart River and Bowen. STATE FORECAST for Sunday night and Monday Cloudy with occasional showers or rain at times on the northeast tropical coast. Isolated showers elsewhere over the tropics with possible isolated late thunderstorms over the northern interior and off the west coast of Cape York Peninsula. High cloud and patchy light rain about the southern tropical coast and the northern central coast easing overnight. Very isolated showers about the SE region this evening. Fine over the remainder of the state. Showers easing a little over the NE tropics for Monday and clearing in the SE. Isolated afternoon showers extending west across the Gulf district for Monday afternoon. Moderate to fresh SE winds over the northern tropics and northwest. Mostly moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere. EXTENDED OUTLOOK Tuesday: The high moves northeast into the northern Tasman Sea and maintains a firm ridge and fresh to strong SE winds over the tropical east coast. Isolated showers along the east coast generally, increasing towards the NE tropical coast. Isolated showers developing over the tropics generally in the afternoon. Possible isolated late thunderstorms about Western Cape York Peninsula. Fine elsewhere over the state. Warm NW to NE winds extend over the interior. Wednesday: The high moves further east and weakens a little. Strong winds about the tropical east coast contracting to north of about Cairns. Isolated showers continuing about the east coast generally, increasing towards the NE tropical coast. Mostly fine conditions elsewhere over eastern Queensland. Very Isolated showers developing over the NW of the state in the evening and extending south into the northern Channel Country. Moist NE winds extend further south over the interior. Fine in the far southeast apart from some early morning fog patches. Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday: The high is expected to move slowly eastwards across the northern Tasman Sea and weaken but will maintain the strong SE winds on the NE tropical coast. Isolated showers continuing about the east coast but decreasing. Isolated showers developing ahead of a surface trough entering western districts in the afternoon on Thursday. The S'ly wind change associated with the trough will reach the SE coast overnight Thursday with little precipitation. The wind change then moves north up the SE coast on Friday with isolated showers to follow with SE winds. Fine over most of the interior apart from thundery rain developing in the far west ahead of the next upper level trough. By Saturday the coastal SE'ly wind change will reach the Capricorn region and stall with maximum showers. In the west thundery rain progresses further east with heavier falls far west.
