WARNING SUMMARY
A strong wind warning is current for coastal waters between Lockhart River and
Bowen.
STATE FORECAST
for the rest of Sunday and Monday
Cloudy with showers about the northeast tropical coast, increasing to rain at
times. Isolated showers elsewhere over the tropics with possible isolated late
thunderstorms over the northern interior and off the west coast of Cape York
Peninsula. High cloud and patchy light rain about the southern tropical coast
and the northern central coast. Very isolated showers about the SE region this
afternoon. Fine elsewhere. Showers easing over the NE tropics for Monday and
clearing in the SE. Isolated afternoon showers extending west across the Gulf
district for Monday. Moderate to fresh SE winds over the northern tropics and
northwest. Mostly moderate SE to NE winds elsewhere.
EXTENDED OUTLOOK
Tuesday: The high moves northeast into the northern Tasman Sea and maintains a
firm ridge and fresh to strong SE winds over the tropical east coast. Isolated
showers over the east coast and adjacent inland in the moist onshore flow, again
more frequent about the northeast tropical coast. Isolated afternoon showers
over the northern interior and northwest, with possible isolated late
thunderstorms about Western Cape York Peninsula. Fine elsewhere. Warm NW to NE
winds extend over the interior.
Wednesday: The high moves east over the Tasman Sea, with strong winds about the
tropical east coast contracting to north of about Cairns and also developing
over the far northeastern Gulf of Carpentaria. Isolated showers will move onto
the northeast tropical coast in the onshore flow. Mostly fine conditions
elsewhere over eastern Queensland with just very isolated showers. Moist NE
winds extend further south over the interior, with very isolated afternoon
showers over the NW extending south in the northern Channel Country. Fine in the
far southeast apart from some early morning fog patches.
Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday: The high is expected to move slowly
eastwards across the northern Tasman Sea, with strong winds gradually easing
over northern Queensland waters. Isolated showers will continue over eastern
districts. A weak trough will move over western districts on Thursday, with very
warm NW to NE winds and isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms to the
northeast of the trough. A second, more significant trough will move into
central Australia on Friday, extending a thundery rain band into far western
Queensland during the day. This trough will approach our western border on
Saturday, extending the thundery rain band further east over western districts
of Queensland.
