MELBOURNE - Aug 20/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
IDQ1070001 WARNING SUMMARY Nil. STATE FORECAST for Friday night and Saturday Isolated showers over the far northern and eastern tropics with isolated afternoon thunderstorms inland. Cool and cloudy with patchy rain areas over western and southern districts contracting northwards and decaying during Saturday morning over central areas of the state. Moderate to fresh SE to E winds over the northern tropics. Mostly moderate SW to SE winds elsewhere. EXTENDED OUTLOOK Sunday: A new upper trough moves eastwards across the western Great Australian Bight. This upper trough will generate a cloud and rain band which will extend across southern Qld. A frontal system, the result of wind outflow from the cloud band, will develop over the south-west of the state and form a complex with the inland trough. Isolated showers will occur over central and north-eastern parts of the state in the warm, moist NE'ly flow ahead of the surface trough. A few storms may also develop near the trough about the central west. The high will reach north-east NSW and will result in strong winds developing along the east coast north of Cape Flattery. A cold morning will occur over the south-east interior with widespread early frosts. A warm day will occur over the north-west of the state due to N'ly winds. Monday: The upper trough will move across NSW and will extend the rain band further eastwards over southern Queensland with a clearance developing over the south-west. The surface front and trough complex will move north-eastwards with isolated showers continuing in the moist NE to NW flow to the north-east of the system. The strong winds along the east coast north of Cape Flattery will ease as the high moves across the far northern Tasman sea. Isolated storms may develop over the central and south-east inland near the complex. A warmer morning will occur across the state due to the cloud cover or N'ly winds. Warmer than average daytime temperatures will continue in the north of the state. Tuesday: The upper trough will move into the Tasman Sea as a new system moves across Victoria. So the cloud and rain band will weaken during the day and move a little northwards. At the same time the surface trough complex will move off the southern coast with the northern section remaining near stationary over the central tropics. So expect further showers mainly in the afternoon will occur over the eastern tropics. Dry SW to S winds will spread across southern districts of the state while moderate to fresh SE winds will continue over the far northern tropics. Outlook for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday: The weak cloud band with some light patchy rain will move slowly norhwards and finally move out of the state on Friday as a clearing upper trough moves across south-eastern Australia. The ridge across southern Qld will move northwards during Wednesday and Thursday. As a result the surface trough will move into the northern tropics on Wednesday before decaying. So dry SW to SE winds will spread across most of the state on Wednesday. Showers will occur with the trough as it moves northwards. By Thursday any showers will be confined to the far northern tropics.
