MELBOURNE - Aug 14/10 - SNS -- The current forecast for the state of Queensland was released by Australia's Bureau of Meteorology.
IDQ1070001 WARNING SUMMARY Nil. STATE FORECAST for Saturday night and Sunday Fine throughout apart from isolated showers over the far north Cape York Peninsula. Moderate SE/E winds over the far northern tropics. Light to moderate NE to NW winds elsewhere becoming fresh at times over southern districts before a gusty SW change spreading across the Channel Country tonight and then throughout southern Queensland during Sunday. EXTENDED OUTLOOK Monday and Tuesday: The high over South Australia will extend a ridge into southern Queensland and continue to push dry air over most of the state. Isolated stream showers will continue over far northern Cape York Peninsula and through Torres Strait and will spread southwards to about the Cairns area by late in the day. Once again below average temperatures are expected over the southern half of the state due to the light winds and clear skies. Early frost areas are expected over the central, southern and south-east interior. Wednesday: The high will move into the Tasman Sea maintaining a pressure gradient along the tropical coast with fresh SE winds and isolated showers. Winds over southern Queensland will once again turn warmer NE/NW ahead of the next trough system moving near the far SW border in the evening. This will result in increasing moisture over central and southern interior causing warmer than average temperatures. Isolated showers may develop along the remaining east coast due to the NE wind flow. The last of the morning frosts will occur over the southern Downs on Wednesday morning. Outlook for Thursday, Friday and Saturday: The high will move across south-eastern Australia and across the Tasman Sea ahead of a new upper trough which will move into central Australia. The new trough system will move eastwards across the southern and southwest parts of the state on Thursday, and then through the eastern parts of the state and off the coast by late Friday. This trough will cause a cloud and rain band to develop over most of the state from the north-west to the south-east corner during Thursday and Friday. The cloud band will clear from western and south-west Queensland during Friday and then move off the east coast on Friday night. Following the trough and cloud band a new high will extend across southern Queensland bring drier S/SW winds.
