Popcorn Board Reallocation

WASHINGTON - Jun 21/10 - SNS -- The USDA wants to change the member provisions of the Popcorn Promotion, Research and Consumer Information Order.

To reflect the consolidation of the popcorn industry and the decreasing number of popcorn processors, this rule proposes to reduce the Popcorn Board membership from nine to five members. This change would also simplify the industry nominations process by having less individuals on the board.

The proposed rule was published in the June 4, 2010, Federal Register. Public comments must be received by July 6, 2010. Comments may be submitted on the Internet at www.regulations.gov or mailed to USDA, Fruit and Vegetable Programs, Research and Promotion Branch, STOP 0244, 1400 Independence Avenue, SW, Washington, DC 20250-0244; or faxed to (202) 205-2800.

Copies of the proposed rule may be requested from the same address or by calling (888) 720-9917 during regular business hours. The proposed rule is also available on www.regulations.gov and www.ams.usda.gov/FVPromotion.

USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service monitors the operations of the Popcorn Board in accordance with the Popcorn Promotion, Research and Consumer Information Act. The board administers an industry-funded national promotion, research and consumer information program to maintain and expand markets for popcorn.
