Seeding Over Half Complete

REGINA - May 27/10 - SNS -- Seeding of all crops passed the halfway mark during the past week, with over 55% of this year's intended acreage now planted, down from 79% at this time last year and below the recent five-year average of 81% complete by May 24.

Saskatchewan Agriculture's weekly Crop Report found seeding was most advanced in the northeastern and eastcentral regions, where 43% and 39% of the respective crops have been seeded. Rain late in the week slowed seeding throughout most of the province.

Seeding is 70% complete in the northwest; 43% complete in the northeast; 65 and 39% complete in the west-central and eastcentral regions, respectively; 60% complete in the southwest and 61% complete in the southeast.

Across the province, topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as 46% surplus and 54% adequate. Early seeded crops are emerging. The majority of the reported crop damage is due to flooding.
