Cattle on Feed Drops 4 Percent in U.S.

WASHINGTON - Apr 23/10 - SNS -- Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the United States for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head quantityed to 10.8 million head on April 1, 2010, according to this USDA report.

The inventory was 4% below April 1, 2009.

The inventory included 6.71 million steers and steer calves, down 4% from a year ago. This group accounted for 62% of the total inventory. Heifers and heifer calves accounted for 4.02 million head, down 3% from 2009.

Placements in feedlots within March totalled 1.86 million, 3% above 2009. Net placements were 1.80 million head.
