South Africa Edible Bean Forecast Shrinks

VANCOUVER - Apr 22/10 - SNS -- This year's dry edible bean harvest in South Africa will be smaller than initially thought because of the failure of farmers to follow through on seeding intentions, according to the latest summer crop production estimates from the South Africa Grain Information Service (SAGIS).

Seeded area is now pegged at 44,100 hectares, down from an intended 48,600, an only 0.7% above the 43,800 hectares sown last year.

The expected yield is 1,364 kilograms per hectare, well above the 1,260 kilograms of the previous forecast, but down from last year's 1,530 kilogran result.
