Bean Area Up More Than Expected

VANCOUVER - Apr 1/10 - SNS -- Dry edible bean seedings in the United States will rise more quickly than expected if farmers stick with their current seeding intentions.

Total land in beans could jump almost 15% from 1.54 to 1.77 million acres this year. Though the USDA does not break out seeding intentions by class, it would appear the biggest increases will be in pinto, navy, and black.

Because they are covered by the U.S. Farm Bill, the USDA makes one exception in this category by reporting seeding intentions for garbanzo beans or chickpeas. Area in that class of bean will jump 36% from 96,000 to 130,600 acres this year if farmers do no change their minds before seeding. Land in large caliber chickpeas is expected to advance from 73,500 to 99,000 acres and land in small caliber chickpeas is expected to go from 22,500 to 31,600 acres.
