Myanmar Pulse Exports Lag 2009

VANCOUVER - Mar 29/10 - SNS -- Pulse exports from Myanmar sank 26% below year earlier levels in February for the fourth consecutive month in which exports were down from year earlier levels on account of reduced demand from India.

Mung bean accounted for 40% of the total exports, followed by Matpe 30% and Toor Whole (Pigeon pea) 26%. India remained the largest buyer in February, accounting for 70% of the total exports.

Commenting on the situation, the U.S. agricultural attache for Myanmar said, "Trade sources reported that 1,700 metric tons (MT) of Matpe raw, 6,200 MT of Matpe ready cargo and 1,450 MT of Matpe special quality ready cargo, 3,100 MT of Mung bean, 600 MT of Mung bean ready cargo and 3,950 MT of Toor whole were traded at the Bayint Naung Market in Rangoon, the largest wholesale market in Burma, in February."
