Indian Pulse Situation Less Murky

VANCOUVER - Mar 27/10 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's rabi season pulse crops in India continued to inch forward during the past week, with modest increase in the amount of land sown to the crop reported by the country's agriculture department.

Total seeded area this winter is up 5.5% at 14.48 million hectares. The biggest area increase is for gram or desi type chickpeas, which jumped 6.9% over last year to 8.93 million hectares; while lentil area is up 3.9% at 1.52 million; mung bean up 8.9% at 768,000; and urad up 7.5% at 894,000 hectares. Land in all other pulses grown in the winter season slipped 0.1% to 2.36 million hectares.

There remains a fair amount of optimism this year's rabi season harvest will more than make up for the declines in last summer's kharif or monsoon season pulse harvest. This is reflected in two ways: less aggressive import purchase activity than last year and easing domestic food prices.
